I just got a text from Midway that they have Speer 235 gr Hot Cor bullets in stock, for your pinking pleasure, I just got 8 boxes, hurry before they are gone.

I called Speer and asked if that bullet at 2700fps would be good for Elk. The technician said absolutely, it is a hot core bullet. We can't call it a premium bonded bullet as there a couple of other steps for that, but it is poured & very tough bullet.

I have shot a lot of them for target practice and have recovered several from the dirt bank and yes they appear to be a tough enough bullet for elk judging by the way they hold up against the dirt bank

That's good to know. My rifles shoot the Speer 270 BT really well, but it's not designated Hot Cor, so I'm wondering if the 235 would be better.

My buddy Keith used the 235gr. Speer on Moose here in B.C. He was quite impressed with the performance, perfect expansion, no bullet breakup. I think the earlier ones, non-hot-core might have been soft, according to Elmer Keith. These newer Hot Core bullets worked well. I think he was driving them in the 2,800fps range.

Many a moose have dropped from a hot-core bullet in Canada. Many say elk are tougher and they may be, but the size of a moose still reflects that this bullet can perform

I used the equivalent-for-caliber bullet (350 grain in .416 Rigby) on a large-ish whitetail this fall and was very pleased with the performance. Immediate expansion, complete penetration.

Muzzle velocity was 2600 and impact was only 40 yards away, so I would expect almost identical terminal conditions on an elk

Just picked up some 235gr and going to try in my H&H. What powder are folks using? Was thinking Varget or IMR4064.

I could never understand why they don't make a 225-235gr all-copper .375HH hunting bullet. Copper would make it 22% larger by volume, giving it a decent BC that would shoot straight as a laser. Perfect for all creatures in North America so the 375HH can have at-home utility.

Barnes 235gr TSX is still in production as is the Hammer Bullet 220gr. Stone Hammer.

Isn’t the Barnes tsx an all copper bullet? They make it in 235 grain as well-I’ve used it a bunch and never a complaint. My wish is thy would put a tip on it as hollow nose bullets are both a blessing and a curse-

These ere all from the Speer #13 book & list the 235gr. HC as having a BC of .317
maximum loads shown - Speers starting loads are 4gr. under these posted.
74.0gr. Varget is listed as producing 2,803fps
74.0gr. of IMR4064 is listed as producing 2,854fps
Vithvouri 540 - 74.0gr. at 2,948fps
H380 84.0gr. at 2,930fps
Re#15 78gr. at 2,920fps

The 235 TSX has a BC of .270. This bullet is not susceptible to breaking up, no matter the vel. produced
especially from a .375 H&H.
Their data is listing higher vel. so over hunting ranges, would be slightly flatter shooting, even though
of lower BC. The actual difference would be negligible.

These are maximum loads shown, Barnes starting loads are 7 to 8gr. under these posted.
H4895 - 77.0 gr. for 2,992fps
IMR4895 - 78.5 gr. for 2,998fps
RE#15 - 80.5 gr. for 3,039fps

I like them for plinking and smaller game.

It can also be a struggle to get consistent supply here.

Here's some results from the Redneck Test Lab.

One I just recovered from 'ballistic autumn soil test media' :ROFLMAO:

Total jacket / core separation, with jacket retained weight of 64.7 grains. Couldn't find the core.

Lab results confirm effective expansion on soft skinned predators.

They've proved accurate out of the CZ with 2208 (aka Varget) and shoot near enough to the same point of aim as the Woodleigh PPSN.

I have used a lot of these pills or the flying ashtrays as a few of us call them here’s a few I’ve got left that I mainly use these days for new shooters to the 375’s

the hotcor is a fairly hard bullet for the h&h if ranges get out a little ( 250 ish yard’s depending on MV of course) it’s better suited to the higher velocity chamberings @ those ranges watch 2300 ish & below impacts on light frame critters if your after a splat factor on little critters or a broader wound in larger critters ( there’s better pills for that situation) they suffer to achieve that @ 2000 ish impacts or below it becomes more visible with longer impact to tip killing times again

enjoy them if you go that way , we do

Cheers

Gday @roorhawk
this USA company
https://www.mcguireballistics.com/shop has various designs on the way down under (6) that I’ll be testing for Sam ( owner ) in the weight class you mentioned as he’s just stepping up to the 375’s & wanting/ awaiting some terminal data that I gather on a variety of critters
( Wallaby deer camels bovines etc )
If you or others are interested I’ll post up results but the bc of these in the other calibers I’ve tested in the McGuire are pretty darn impressive ( terminal not to bad either lol ) & by looking @ the pictures I’ve seen these will be the same
( I haven’t got permission to post pictures from Sam so I won’t & apologies in advance on that sorry as these are in various prototypes designs but I’ll ask when I talk with him next)
Cheers

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
