Hi Tony
Funny enough I was in FARO EAST on a Lord Derby Eland this year. All of what you mentioned is very accurate and makes me re-live the moment. From airport handler to accommodation, safety, vehicules, food and last but not least… the hunting itself, I could honestly not come up with one complaint.
I feel blessed having had the luck to hunt is this beautiful area with abundant wildlife, particulary well managed with regards to anti-poaching. There is obviously no reward without effort! A big upgrade of the Cameroon I’ve seen 15 years ago and decided to never go back to.
A chat with my father, now 71, asking him what he considered as the most memorable hunt in his life made me change my mind. Tracking Lord Derby in Cameroon.
Gathering the funds is one thing, but finding a good concession ran by good and honest people is another. This concession is owned by veteran in the game, Patrick Dahlan, and his son Romain. Both easy going, experienced and straight forward people. They prepare the hunts way in advance and give feedback whenever asked.
The results of good management were there. I can in all honesty say the entire trophy list could have been hunted and bagged throughout the journey. Every single day we saw red duiker, baboons, buffalo, warthog, roan and cob in good numbers. Hartebeest, oribi, elephant, eland, bushbuck, reedbuck and red river hog we saw at least once with a good opportunity on a trophy for each specie. Luck was obviously on my side, but still all the ingredients had to be there in order to be able to be lucky. This was definitely the case.
On the first day, the experienced Patrick Dahlan and his excellent team of trackers brought me to a big group of Eland after 13km of tracking. The trackers played the wind well and we had the time to properly observe the herd containing 3 mature bulls, and although being it the first day, I decided to take the shot. Beggars can’t be choosers… beautiful eland down and I was a very happy chappy.
The “pressure” was gone and as from the second day onwards we could start hunting and explore freely. Patrick is picky when it comes to trophies and I consequently bagged some very nice specimens.
All of them were hunted with .375 Barnes X, doing well on both small and big animals.
For everybody keen to live this experience, talk to Romain indeed! Cell 0032 485 21 22 74.
Glad I could share my journey with you guys!!
