Botswana’s draft 2026 hunting quota report marks a turning point in the nation’s wildlife management strategy—highlighting not only an increase in elephant hunting allocations but also the long-talked about reintroduction of big predators such as lions into the national quota system.

According to the preliminary document, the elephant quota for 2026 has risen from 410 to 430, reflecting an additional 20 animals compared to the 2025 season. Alongside this increase, the licence fee for elephant hunts has also been revised upward from P70,000 to P100,000. The report further proposes a continuous hunting season for elephants, a notable policy shift from the traditional seasonal model managed by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP).

Perhaps the most striking development, however, is the return of lions to Botswana’s hunting framework. After years under a strict hunting moratorium, lions are once again included in the national quota — with 10 lions proposed for the 2026 season. They join 93 leopards on the list of big predators permitted under controlled hunting allocations.

The reintroduction of apex predators into the quota system signals both ecological and regulatory change. It suggests an apparent renewed confidence in predator population recovery and an effort to balance conservation goals with economic and community benefits derived from regulated trophy hunting.

While the proposed measures are still under review, the 2026 draft report underscores Botswana’s evolving approach to wildlife management — one that reportedly seeks to harmonize sustainable use, biodiversity protection, and local livelihood opportunities.

Saw this awesome lion during my ele hunt. Would have been awesome to hunt him!

Following. Good news! I would love to return to Botswana.

Happy hunting to all, TheGrayRider a.k.a. Tom.

i,m not aloud to hunt lions, toby said so.
Does Toby realize that given the chance said lion would happily eat him or you.
I’m in the same boat, even though I would love to hunt a wild lion or a leopard the wife says NO CATS.

Women are so weirdly different. Mine wants me to get as many cats as I can. Wants me to book a lynx hunt now! She likes the “pretty” animals. Didn’t want me to mount my “ugly” hyena until I said I would mount it lying dead beneath my lion standing over it. Prefers typical mule deer over nontypical mule deer because they are more “pretty”! Lol.

Yup, mine wanted me to shoulder or pedastal mount my eland, kudu, oryx, springbok, blue wildebeest when I was just planning on euro mounts because they are such beautiful and unique animals. She would love me to get a crocodile and get a mount done, but does not want me to hunt leopard, lion, zebra, giraffe because they are ‘too pretty’.

Counting my blessings anyways she supports my plans for a buffalo, hippo +\- crocodile in a few years and is taking our kids with us when we go back to Namibia next year.

My wife being from Zambia says, “Cats are creepy!”

On returning home one afternoon she told me to shoot the cat in our backyard. I looked and informed her it was the neighbors cat. She then said it was looking at her and she didn’t like that!

The above is an example of cultural differences. Americans and Europeans have the big, bad, wolf to scare us as children. Africans have a lion hiding behind every bush!

It’s taken us some time to convince the department of Wildlife but they have finally seen the logic in having the Elephant season open the whole year. Some areas get quota but come hunting season the bulls have moved out!
Of sure the lion quota will be a yearly occurrence. At this stage it’s just an experimental quota.
Truth be told lack of diamond sales has forced Botswana to find revenue from wherever it can.

Yeah, on our latest safari I had plans to euro mount a black and blue wildebeest, my wife took one look at the blue wildebeest hide and told me I had to pedestal mount it! So I chimed in that the black wildebeest would look good next to him for comparison, she didn’t hesitate and said “yes he would”, needless to say I didn’t argue!

Back to the OP, hopefully the Botswana Govt won’t buckle to outside pressure,

This could be its own interesting thread. My wife has asked me not to hunt an Elephant or a Dolphin (little concern over the dolphin :ROFLMAO:).

Everything else is on the table for her and she encourages me to go on hunts for every other animal I am interested in. She even likes the mounts of animals that many people are offended by (cute and cuddly predators).

Any updates on Botswana quotas?

What hoops do they have to jump thru?

Nothing yet but I’m told it is happening. I’m also told expect high prices.

Glad to see a Country standing up and making decision for itself!

@Scott CWO That is a nice looking lion.

Cats are most definitely on our list.

It will be great to see but who wants to set the Over/Under on the costs of a Lion or “Full Bag” Hunt in the Okavango???..
It won’t be for the feint of heart that’s for sure….
I’d guess it looks like it’s in Pesos vs. Dollars lol

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA
