Good Gun Deals This Week

I’m tempted by thug but I really want a 450/400 for my first double.

Can I ask an honest question?
Is this typical accuracy for a double? Looks to be horrible for a gun that costs that much and expected to be used in close quarters on something that will end you.
Perhaps its not as bad as it seems but a 2"+ spread at 50 meters seems excessive.
Somebody straighten me out.

Not bad really. Obviously that is with a box of factory ammunition and a barrel mechanic moving a wedge around at the factory. A hand load may improve it, but Chapuis isn’t going to design a load to optimize each rifle.

I would much prefer seeing a 3” or 4” group that is crossing or parallel though. I know I can move a group in or out with velocity, not so easy when the group looks like \

Factory ammo or not, that is god awful. I wouldn't touch that rifle.

I can’t reliably say that is normal, but I can say that I’ve shot cheaper doubles, Merkel’s, that I could put four rounds into a CokaCola can turned sideways @ 25 yards in 470 NE with very old ammo not even regulated to those guns.

But no, I would not want to go into a situation with the likes of that gun.

Two 'proper' Mannlichers coming up for sale in France, and which look to be in good condition.

One in 9.3x62, subject to some unnecessary but tolerable engraving and drilled and tapped with an unidentified 'scope, the other in .243 with a QD Zeiss Diavari.

The dreaded Monsieur Brunel is the auctioneer's registered contact - not the easiest person to deal with. I'd be very interested in the second rifle if it wasn't in .243.

When Gina was buying her Chapuis 450/400 we were fortunate that George had two to pick from. One had a target like that and the other had a target that had shots side by side AND had the better wood ;)

Having said that, I believe most in the double rifle World would say 2" at 50 meters is acceptable.

I just don't think I have ever seen one in 300 h&h and it looks factory. If I didn't have a custom M70 in 300 h&h I would be all over this.

If it is the same gun I had in my hands a few months ago at the store it is a semi-custom with a McGowen barrel. Whitworth stock, Interarms action. Last year Morphy’s had an auction with several guns with similar configurations. I purchased a 7x64 Whitworth Mannlicher stocked Interarms action with a McGowen barrel.
