375 caliber anything has no business associating with real rifle cartridges. Decent small big bore cartridge calibers start at .400 caliber............. Real cartridge calibers start at .458.......to even consider 375 in the same class as real cartridge calibers is a second rate farce at best...........not even suitable for girls.

Sauer did import a similar rifle into the USA under the Colt brand but I think it was the model 80. As far as I know the Sauer model 90 was a European only model or at least was never imported into the USA. Super nice rifles. This one also featured carvings of Cape Buffalo and Lion on the buttstock.

My 8-bore got its first public debut today! My neighbors threw a small party down at the river. A proper party for our little nook of the forest with a fire pit, music, charcoal grill, and guns.

The original plan was to load up a bunch of cartridges with a ball over smokeless powder... but then I looked at my dwindling stock of Blue Dot and the plans changed. So, a ball over black powder was the order of the day! My load was an 85 caliber ball and a 1/2-inch 8ga fiber wad over 274gr of FFg black powder (with plenty of lube over the wad).

Now sadly only a few people were brave enough to pull the trigger on my rifle. But the few who did, found it to be a surprisingly enjoyable gun to shoot! The 24-inch gong we had set up at 30 yards was easy to hit and a 900gr ball made a satisfying sound. This wasn't meant to be a challenge; it was meant to be fun. I really wish the others had been willing to give the gun a try!

My hope is that someone throws a proper large bore shoot in the near future so more people can experience the joys of a traditional English 8-bore double rifle.

In the last couple weeks I have been learning the true down side of going down the "big bore rabbit hole". None of my friends will go shooting with me any more... or if they do, they won't touch my rifles.

I need some friends in western WA who enjoy large bore guns!

My name is Charles, and I am attracted to large bore rifles.

I try to maintain and control a desire, year after year, for 25 years now. I don't really have a problem, I'm sure.

I shoot a .458 Win Mag, but I feel a NEED to shoot an 8-bore English Double Rifle.
But I don't really need to buy one. I really don't.

Looking for advice from more experienced members. Maybe just a 10 bore double?

A 10-bore isn't going to cut it, at least not if you're buying an antique. The 10-bore wasn't typically used for dangerous game so most of the 10-bore rifles you find will use shorter cases and lighter regulating loads. These guns would traditionally be used for game such as driven boar.

You are welcome to come visit me in WA. I'll let you shoot my 8-bore as much as you like.

What also needs to happen is, @frog stealer needs to bring that fine new 577 up to my place! We need to do some extensive shooting to make sure Heym built it right.

Can't help...

I've been doing some thinking about what modern cartridges to compare the old bore cartridges to (in terms of purpose). Maybe something like this:

4-bore = 577 NE
8-bore = 375 H&H
10-bore = 9.3x62

A 4-bore would be a dedicated elephant gun. While the 8-bore would be a lighter recoiling gun for all dangerous game but inferior performance on elephant. The 10-bore would be for tough medium/large game, but would be suitable for big cats.

I am not an expert on these old cartridges. I'm just going off their general performance and what I've read on the topic.

Well since my last confession I have sinned. I have purchased a double rifle in 450/400 and while this is on the smaller end it has fueled my addiction to new heights and I am now considering finding a double in 500 nitro or larger. May my wallet and wife forgive me…

The guy with the largest big bore collection in Australia and world class at that is based in Perth - and he hunts with them . Next best is in Darwin - a big hunter .

Hello, my name is V. and I'm a big bore addict.

I fell in with the wrong kind of people you know. Bunch of enablers from a little known gang called AfricaHunting...

I was previously such a content school choir boy, happy with my little sins in the form of a 300WM, a bit like a weekly calm beer, but then these guys took me in, in a low point of my life. I had tasted a bit of Africa and suddenly I needed more of this rush caused by recoil. So one of their 'fixers' got me onto some .375H&H and wow it was like a world went open. Talk about mind altering... Ever since I've been chasing the rabbit down the hole... All hope is lost now, they got me hooked up on some .500NE and I remain in agony until my next shot of blissful nirvana.

So when you see me walking down the street with a vague look in the eyes, corner of my mouth turned into some kind of smile, you now understand why you need to cross the street to avoid contamination.

Where will it stop??? There are rumours of a few of the gangmembers having found even stronger doses than .500NE. Something something bore.. seems to be a low figure in front of it... We shall see who will survive in the end, the man or the addiction...

@Pondoro Some fine looking rifles!

@VertigoBE I'm afraid you are lost... you can struggle if it makes you feel better. But, in the end you will be wondering why your friends no longer shoot with you, as you lovingly load cartridges for your shoulder fired artillery pieces.

Nice S80 with EAW mounts, what caliber?, the S90 had minor modifications but essentially was the same gun. rear locking flaps, smoothest action there ever was.
