Hunting reports
Africa

I will soon be leaving on my 1st trip to Zimbabwe. I will be taking Delta to Jberg, overnighting, then Airlink to Harare.

Do you typically bring more than 1 rifle...if so do you pack them in separate gun cases or bring both in 1 case?

My original intent was to bring my standard travel pack with clothes, gear, etc...along with 2 hard sided gun case containing 1 rifle each with some other odds and ends. Fearing the airlines misplacing one case I may receive the second. Any input appreciated.

I brought 2 rifles 1 time, definitely in the same case. Every other time no matter in the US or Africa, I only bring 1 rifle.

Best of luck, we look forward to the report!

I've done 14 trips to Africa. Several to Zim with flying into Harare. Always packed two rifles in one hard case. If you bring two separate cases, you'll get hit with fees for the extra bag.

1 case only. 2 rifles if you think it’s necessary. Airlink will charge extra both ways per rifle even if it’s one case .

Be advised that the Air Link baggage allowance weight is less than major airlines. They charged me about $10 US per extra kilogram. Ouch!

For me 2 rifles, same case. Always. Although 2 cases, I haven’t thought about it. Doubles your chances of getting a workable rifle to Africa. Doubles your chances of a broken or missing rifle. The extra fees incurred would be a drop in a swimming pool for your safari. I guess it all depends on…

“Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?”

On this too I shall ponder………….

Do you happen to know if a duffel bag may be used. I thought I read no soft sided bags…I was wanting to use my Cabelas wet bag as I have typically traveled with it for my North American hunts.

The bag I use is essentially a duffel bag that has a bottom frame and a set of wheels. So it’s really a soft sided piece on 3 sides. It does load from the top though, not the end.

2 rifles, one case. Why spend money on crazy baggage fees when you could use that for other game? Also, if they lose one of your rifles, your head won’t be in the game anyway until it shows up. If the worse does happen to your one case, most PH’s have a loaner rifle to get you hunting.

Two rifles in one case was my original plan.
But I ended up going with one rifle in a double gun case, plus my sticks, soft case, binoculars, Leatherman, knife, and other misc rifle specific gear.

You can make it work with two rifles. Others do.

What case is that. I have a cables xtreme case as well as a pelican V 800. The pelican is quite a bit bigger but I think it would be outside the restrictions of the airline. I can get 2 guns in it as well as many other items. The Cabelas case I can get 2 guns in but little room for other items.

It's the Pelican Storm im3300. IIRC it's about 0.5" or so wider than the 1750, which made a difference to me for two Scoped rifles.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
