Thanks!

Hello Daniel,

The first thing would be a budget number. That will pretty much decide who and what you will be able to get. the 500 Jeffery with the rebated rim will require a builder or company that really knows how to perfect the feeding. If that does not work, you basically have a club. What kind of features you may want as far as metalwork and wood will also come into play. For instance, Westley Richards has a used 500 Jeffery by Mr Wiebe At $20,000 seems like a nice rifle, will give you a idea of what to expect for that kind of outlay. or if your budget is A LOT less you might be able to find a custom CZ and hope it feeds or have to send it off and hope it can be made to feed without fault. Again it’s all about the Budget and what you can get within that number. We all dream and finding the right combination of the quality you want verses what you are WILLING to spend is the conundrum we all face.

I think Mr. Jacobson is still making rifles, you could look into American Hunting Rifles. https://hunting-rifles.com/home/

He built me a nice 505 years ago but I'm not sure what he is up to these days.

A subjective question, all considering, cost, etc. Beautiful Westley Richards!
A lot of these builds are extremely unfamiliar, B. Laubscher, Francotte, h. dumoulin & fils, etc.

I am with Matt85. My first call would be to AHR (Wayne Jacobsen) to see if, when and what he would do. I have more then one of his work and they get used with several years of reliability behind them.

I do have a 2nd hand AHR, it is the finest Magazine i own, a little short for me, however...
That Hartmann and Weiss, & Wiebe are really fine examples. This can get out of my league really quick. Names like B. Laubscher, Francotte, h. dumoulin & fils, etc, completely unfamiliar.

I learned from a member this was not a true Jeffery, the price was allegedly way out of line

, but a stunning example none the less.

Beautiful rifle. Wayne does wonderful work as did his predecessor Ed Plummer. Harlan Satrang converted my CZ 550 in 375 H&H to 500 Jeffery. Wayne did his CZ#1 Upgrade to it. I'm very happy with it. If the LOP is bit to short for you, may I suggest putting a slip on Limbsaver recoil pad when you are at the range or hunting then taking it off when it's home. That's what I do, I have long arms, the little bit of extra padding doesn't hurt either.

I would insist on a Granite Mountain action. They build the magazine box, bolt face feeding ramps specific to the cartridge. On their website they have samples of rifles built on the GM actions by several quality rifle makers. I chose Reto Beuhler to buid my GM based 404 Jeffery. Outstanding work. I posted pictures of this rifle elsewhere on AH.

I've never owned a GMA action but I've heard they're wonderful. My CZ 500 Jeffery had some issues feeding initially, i had two gunsmiths polish the feed ramp, etc, but it wasmachining the magazine follower for the fatter cartridge did the trick. It now feeds and extracts slow, fast, upside down, never fails. As Nevada Mike said every part of a Mauser type action needs to be tailored for the cartridge. I believe the CZ magazine follower was the same as their 416 Rigby follower until my gunsmith machined it to fit the 500 Jeffery cartridge.

I second Duane Wiebe. The takedown 500J I had of his was incredible on fit, finish and quality.

You are right on the money with this comment. Mauser based actions need close tolerances and to be designed for the cartridge. And in fact most actions are not wide enough under the rails for the 500 Jeff. So compromises will have to be made.

Daniel my thoughts are as follows- I think you want something that looks a bit special but are not thinking a rifle from Westley Richards, no expense spared category. So I reckon you should look for a cz in 458 win mag and get a good gunsmith to create your vision. You may even get a cz with a good stock- I have a good factory stock and have seen awesome factory stocks. A good Smith can make a cz into a beautiful and functional rifle for a reasonable price.

I would give Ralf Martini of Martini Gunmakers a call. You won't find a better custom gunsmith anywhere.
Thank You! .. i know a just a little about him through the surface web.

Is anyone familiar with "MNR Rifles"?

Daniel,

In no way was I implying that you go out and purchase A Westley Richards. Just that they were the ones that had the Duane Wiebe rifle in 500 Jeffery that I posted to give a ballpark figure, for what a rifle would cost from a well known American maker that does outstanding work.

I do not know much about MNR but have seen photos and comments posted here from other Members. The rifles looked good but can’t find them.

I would surmise that if your ballpark number is known the membership would throw all kinds of options for you that you might not think of. This place is the ultimate information storehouse, people always help if they can.

No, I do Thank you, respectively.
I came across what I thought was "Jeffery", learned a great deal from a member here as it was built by Paul Roberts. In short, it was a "Jeffery" asking price & above my means anyhow.
There's a wealth of information I don't have, Comparing London guns, Dorleac & Dorleac, Wiebe, etc.

MNR was really receptive & beautiful examples.

I’ve worked with MNR. Matt is excellent. I had some issues with the magazine on a granite mountain arms 404 Jeffery. He got it working perfectly and also did a great job milling the receiver for smithson scope mounts and rust bluing the rifle. He is currently working on my 505 Gibbs built on a Vektor action. That rifle had some serious issues feeding and the bolt face got damaged. He is converting it to 500 Jeffery as I’m concerned that the bolt diameter is a bit too small for the Gibbs case and want to avoid the repaired area from breaking again.

I realize how hard the bug has bit. I’m on the cusp of safari #2 and I’m looking to plan #3 with my 11 year old a year from now while looking at my work schedule for overtime and computing the math of how many shifts are needed….
