Hey guys,

This is for all you .458 Win Mag fans out there!

The last few days I've finally got around to doing something I've wanted to do in the .458 for a long time... load up some Woodleigh Hydro's.

I contacted NT Firearms Gove and got hold of some Hydro's in 450gn.

Here's what they look like...

I then loaded up a few (in some cruddy looking brass! ) with a healthy dose of Benchmark 2 powder and they looked like this...

Then today saw me at the range to put a couple over the chronograph.
I was after around 2200fps.
After 3 shots, here's what I got...

This is 100fps faster than what I was expecting and seemed to be very consistent.
It also punched out a lazy 5370ft/lbs.
Bolt lift was normal, fired primers looked great and the cases just fell out of the chamber.

Haven't used them on game yet so hope to try them on a big Sambar stag in the next couple of weeks.
I don't reckon they'll bounce off!
As soon as I've tried them on game I'll post the results...(y)

Cheers,

Russ

Great work.

The only people who denigrate the 458Win are people who haven't used it, can't shoot or parrot what they have read on the internet or all of those !

Oh, bugger. @Sarg got in first..

You wouldn't believe it I read the .458wm is no good! Yep, it's on the internet. That's almost as reliable as Facebook, or close.

Now with all those powder caking issues , Winchester ammo, Temperature extremes and being about as aerodynamic like a Besser Block. No, it's not a good proposal.

I forgot, Ur a Mexican. The temp extremes won't be an issue but you know you need @least 2150fps & 500gn projectiles to kill an Elephant and many an internet expert says it can't be done!

Anyway, it's good to see you posting.

I had .458wm selling it to fund the .375H&H , now CZ are going up I price I should have kept it.

Anyway, good luck with it I hope you get a monster Sambar. The internet says a 2150fps minimum for Elephant so they probably won't "Bounce Off" . The saving grace is the Woodleigh Hydro projectiles, you will do ok.

Energy of your load is 728 KG/6.542 joule
Enough for everything.
Like your chrono.

Not you Great Grandpa's 458Win Mag. Modern powders and primers have given the 458WM new life. Being able to role your own is an even greater advantage. I really like 450gr bullets in my 458WM. Still over the .300 sectional density widely considered the minimum necessary for proper penetration. It appears you stumbled on a very consistent load. What are the specs on your rifle?? Curious on the barrel length and action type.

Big velocity advantage using the grooved monolithics as well. I have found that out in my 375 H&H. They seem to be able to get more velocity in almost every cartridge I have tried them in without pressure issues.
Excellent results for the good old 458 WM!

Interesting point,
Might explain why he is getting good results or good velocity.

@Badboymelvin
Russ they will ream a sambar out from stem to stern and still keep going.
A nate shot a buff with one out of a 300 Weatherby and he thought that he missed when the projectile kicked up dust a few hundred yards behind it. Yes the buff did die and he said they would be a great bullet on a brontosauras with that amount of penetration.

No, I do it because of all the people it got maimed or killed. That's why it was dubbed the "Wounder Wonder". In the beginning when no one had chronos, it was only mustering 1800 fps with a 500 grain bullet. I think modern powders have taken up a lot of its short comings, but if it was that great, the Lott, the Sabi, and the 3 inch express wouldn't be so popular in Africa.

I mostly "denigrate" it, because that's half the fun of having friends on forums lol

Have you used one on Big Game or for more than 30yrs ?

I have never seen it called the "Wounder Wonder" myself & if it was doing 1800fps (which I doubt just some loser trying to sell magazine articles, who couldn't hunt or shoot) that is plenty any way for Buffalo down as I have killed lots of Buffalo & Banteng with a 45/70 & 500gr doing around that or less.

On the other .458's well I think the 30/06 is plenty out to 500yd maybe 650yd if your good on any game you should be shooting with a .30 cal but folks like the Big .30 cal magnums to, most don't need them, other than to make them selves feel better & that's fine .

I think when losers mess their shots up & they fail they then try to blame some thing or one & picked on the rifle or in this case caliber, now bullets can be a problem .

Is there really any real record of hunters being maimed or killed because of the .458Win failing to kill some thing ?

I suspect again just poor shooting or decision making in a tight spot !

Best example is probably always going to be Jack Lott. The Win Mag's failure is why the Lott exsists. Contact the game departments and ask for the data they have on the .458 Win Mag. I didn't make this stuff up just to have a fun argument. My information came from a PH that's now over 70 years old. Quite sure he knows what he is talking about.

With that said, I'd still take a .458 Win Mag if the right one came along. For the same reason you mentioned. Same reason I have a .300 RUM and .300 Win Mag. But those are overkill situations, and as Elmer said, overkill always beats the alternative lol

So you went from hiding under a rock to posting a dollup of .375 bullet specs that your PH is going to use for his next book/article and poking the .458 crowd. Ha! Bold strategy from a .375 Ruger(optimized for shorter barrels) wielder. Welcome back!

The favored crowd to be picked on around here is the .35 Whelen crowd. They're a magical cult located in the under .375 zone...with the .243... much to their chagrin.

The .458 WM is revived and back from the imagined pit of doom the gun writers tried to push it into. It works just fine and kills game big and small. Russ is a little crazy and shooting some big bullets in it, but gotta love him for posting the development data. Other than that, I have two hand held loaders for it and am slowly looking for brass. Life is good and the .458 is here to stay unlike your Ruger...LOL
