Blue Duiker - A Small Obsession

Absolutely fantastic duiker! Well done.

Was this the maiden hunt for the .275? I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it and comparing notes - first hunt with mine was April in RSA.

Ive started building an interest in the little guys lately.. still havent taken any as of yet, but I did pursue steinbok on the last trip over (unsuccessful), and we saw a couple of duikers bounding through the bush one afternoon when we were looking for bushbuck..

perhaps starting the tiny 10 will be an objective on a 2022 hunt!

@Red Leg, I'm with you on the Blue Land Cruiser, but haven't warmed up to the tiny 10 yet. Regardless, congratulations on the Blue Diker. BTW, hoping to see you posing with the @spike.t specialty, a nice trophy sable soon.

I picked it up years ago, and it has nothing to do with Europe. The rifle rides as easily muzzle down as up, and comes up instantly and intuitively to firing position unlike a more conventional carry which requires a two-hand drill. I have noticed a rather well known PH in Zim by the name of Len Taylor uses the same carry. Though, I don’t think he got it from me.

I don’t use it in mountains, but works perfectly on long stalks or stern chases in Africa.

Not really perusing them as such, but I love hunting those that may be available in the area I am already hunting for another priority animal. Thus far I have been fortunate to take blue, red, and common Duiker, Suni, Oribi, and Steenbok. I still kick myself for not hunting a Dik-Dik in Namibia during one of my hunts there.

Although at very little risk I suppose except when going up or down, I always worried the barrel might scrape the earth just enough for a slight barrel blockage. I noticed Europeans, especially the Germans, carry the rifle with a shoulder sling but forward of their bodies. I am still at a loss of how it comes up to a ready shooting position. If I slide it under my shoulder that has the sling, would it not be upside down ?

I carry my rifle upside down on the weak side as well. It’s a very quick ready up position. You grab the forend with your weak side hand and lift up and roll it into position using a curling motion (your wrist has to roll it right side up). Done just right, you can even have your sling already under your elbow for stability.
