257 Roberts vs 25-06

but bob,
what would you choose if you only had the choice of a 270 and a 243?
bruce.
@bruce moulds
Neither mate but If'n push came to shove it would be the 270 then trade it for a 25.
I would prefer a savage 110 or Weatherby S2 or even a 28 inch barrel Ruger No1 in 25 ought six than a H&H in 270.
If'n you tried to give me a 243 it better come with a tub of butter to make it less painful to put it where the sun don't shine.
Bob

sounds like you would intend to administer it sideways.
it could be said that the only thing better than a 243 is a sako 243.

@bruce moulds
Nothing 243 is good mate. Sideways is sounding good

As you can see im not the only 6mm dissenter.

I'm looking at buying a Kimber select grade rifle and thought a nice wood stock ought to be chambered in a classic round. In looking at the available choices, I have narrowed it down to the 257 roberts, 25-06, and 30-06. The 06 is not my question however.

The 257 roberts has always intrigued me. However, it always suffered from its competition like the 25-06. I assume comparing the two would be like comparing the 308 to the 30-06.

Rifle weight wise, the 257 is 5 pounds 12 ounces, a little light and hopefully not a problem shooting with the forearm unsupported. The 25-06 is 6 pounds 3 ounces and is probably just a perfect weight scoped.

Do you think the 25-06 offers a significant enough advantage over the 257 on game up to 300 pounds that one should just go with the faster more powerful cartridge? Or does the 257 still hold a special place in your heart and gets the job done?

Finally an odd question. If a rifle is marked 257 roberts and your ammo is marked 257 roberts +p, does that pose any problems for international travel - particularly Africa?

Thanks all
I would go with a 30-06 I have all three calibers between my Father and I and the 30-06 is the only one I like but that’s just personal opinion I know they will all work just I prefer a heavier Bullet.

I am switching from the 257R, to the 6.5CR. Thought it would be fun to actually learn how to shoot long range properly and use all the fancy stuff that you can get on optics these days. Have a 4x32 NF going on a Fix. Should be good from varmints on up here in the US.

I don't see any practical difference between them. And I do not believe I'd shoot anything but premiums out of either one, especially if there was a chance I might be shooting at under 100 yards. Cup and cores don't have a great history of holding together at high impact velocity.

Bruce,
These last few posts regarding Bob and a .243 have stimulated a recurring nightmare. I show up at Bob’s place with a .243 Blaser R8 to do some hunting. Bob finds out it’s a .243 and his eyes glaze over and he begins shaking and mumbling. He grabs a tomahawk and chases me through the bush, but I find a lingum (lingam?..some type of tunnel) to crawl into. He can’t get into the tunnel because his arm is in a sling due to his shoulder surgery. He yells and screams unmentionables about the .243 and something about chopping off the barrel. Since I have the R8, I take the barrel off and throw it out the tunnel. This seems to appease him and the yelling and screaming stops. I later exit the tunnel in the darkness and Bob is gone. I then wake up in a cold sweat. But, at least there’s no tub of butter involved in my nightmare.

A 243 is a good round but it has its limitations same as the .25-06 .

I've seen gun counters sell 243's saying that they are great for any animal up to and including elk, but that's where the problems start. Sad but the same can be said about the 25-06, but it is a better round for elk if it comes down to it.

Neither one will make a dangerous game round but the 25-06 will do a lot more than that 243

Or, split the difference and buy a 6.5 Creedmoor for elk?

make it a 6.5x55 SE

make it a 6.5x55 SE
Or, if you really want to retro to the past and reload to the edge, a 6.5 Remington Magnum. Became extinct in it's day, but would be one of the latest and greatest 6.5 if had been introduced in today's 6.5 world. Especially in today's Covid/riots fueled cartridge brass shortage, as the brass can be made from any of the .458WM family of brass cases. I watched a video of a guy making the cases from 7mm RM brass. A little time consuming, but he had his brass!

The problem with a 6.5 Crudmore is going to be bullets. A shoulder hit elk with one and you are going to be in for a long tracking job. But the same thing will happen with a 25-06. I've seen a 243 round bounce off of a shoulder of a elk with only superficial damage to the elk.

For me the minimum caliber for a elk is going to be a 270 Win. Will the other kill elk, sure but you are going to have to have luck on your side.

That's where I like my 340 Weatherby for elk

JimP,
Yeah, I was just being my usual facetious self when I suggested the Crudmoor for elk. I have used my .338WM with super premium 225gr Remington Core Lokts for years and haven't had any complaints from elk I've shot with them. But I'd be open to a .338 Creedmoor?

@CoElkHunter
Mate your night mare even scared me but I will give you credit for having the balls to show up with a 243 in the first place. You should know by now it's got to be a 25 of some sort.
I can see y ou in a gun shop looking at a 243 and waiting for me to jump out and rip you limb from limb.
Mate you @bruce moulds and @CBH love stirring the pot but hey the operation I had on my shoulder wasn't actually a reconstruction but a realine of the Teflon pads so the shit stirring continues to slide off.

Mate I can see I need to ring you and have a serious talk. First you like the 243 and are now singing the praises of the 6.5 Crudmore Man Bun.
NASA we have a problem.
I will have a look on Google and see If'n I can find a good therapist in your area. Next you will be saying the 338 win mag is as good as a properly loaded Whelen.
I think you should go hunting and get these delusions out of your system otherwise along with these problems you will join the soy lat`e set and eating tofu.

AND showed up with a Blaser R8! Only because I didn't know if the new Savage pull bolt had detachable barrels! Ha! Ha! Ha! Hey Bob, you started this with the tub of butter and Bruce with the shoving of something sideways? I'm glad I retreated to the lingam (?) tunnel during my nightmare! Ha! Ha!

Ha! Ha! Ha! Why do you think I'm on here at 0 Dark Thirty my time on my first of two days off. Well Bob, I'm kind of "punch drunk". After getting off work, now yesterday and sleeping for three hours, I got up and drove for about an hour and then hunted pheasants all day until 1630 with my crazy father in law and a brother in law. I was looking for a lingum tunnel to crawl into, but none to be found. So now, I'm on here harassing you and other AH members because I'm WIDE awake, cause I'm normally at work right now! So, suffer my indulgences! Ha! Ha!
