Rifle for First time Owner

@BeeMaa
I know it's an old thread but I'm enjoying reading them and seeing what people think now and seeing if and how things have changed.
Bob
It's funny how even your own tastes can evolve over time.
Cheers mate.

I am gonna get back to the op. Gonna have to go with shotgun. Buy a $250 moss burg or Winchester pump shotgun. And load with a slug, buckshot or something else. He wants a backup and I assume that is because the animals are close or because he is following up a wounded animal. Not so he can reach out and touch them at over 100 yards. But I guess we all need a little more info on what the backup will be used for.

I would highly recommend a .30-06 Springfield , just like several of the other gentlemen have . You can use some 180 grain Nosler Partition soft nosed factory loads for most of your plains game . But please do consider bringing along some 220 grain Sako Hammerhead soft nosed factory loads , should you intend on hunting a large eland bull .

Check out Savage Model 11 hoghunter in .308. Very reasonably priced, tack driver. Several standard features which are quite desireable. Less recoil than 30-06, with very similiar ballistic performance.

Blaser R8.

Granted, not the most affordable option but it is a good one.
I wish I had known about the Blaser rifle system when I started shooting.
Or something similar with interchangeable barrels like the Mauser M12...etc.
Gives lots of room for any shooter to grow and adapt to the game they want to hunt.

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen is the resurrectionist of old threads. He is like the mad librarian of AH and finds some really cool stuff in his dusty digging.

I for one wonder why nobody asked the question: "What do you mean by a backup rifle?"
If I were poking things with arrows and wanting a rifle to follow up I would choose something other than a .30-06. Is he concerned with something that isn't plains game snooping around his kill or is he trying to put down something that has been hit by an arrow poorly? Those are two very different rifles.

If the rifle is to be carried with the bow, I'd go with the Remington 7600 carbine in either .30-06 loaded heavy in the 180-220 ranges or the .35 Whelen 225-275 ranges. Other than that I would take some rifle that hits hard at distance because I am trying to finish a big wounded animal at possibly long ranges and that for me is a .375 with Leupold turret scope.

Hi Guys,

I am a bowhunter but want to buy a rifle for backup.

I mainly hunt plainsgame

Please advise me

Thanks
375HH will serve you in every conceivable situation you'll ever encounter in Africa.

Hell since it’s 9 years old he probably has moved on to a 6.5 creedmore by now

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen There is no rule to the contrary and it's a lot more interesting than the .404 crew and their discussion. Here's the link:.404 Jeffery Discussion Summary

Hello Forrest Halley,

I clicked on your;

“404 Jeffery Discussion Summary”,

which you had highlighted in blue.
The photo that appears seems to possibly indicate a non-English language porn site ?
I did not bother to play the attached video.

Puzzled,
Velo Dog.

It is certainly not a porn site linked through Facebook. It is a parody video which may contain slightly off colour humour.

Some dude in tights, laying on his back, while pressing an oblong object to his groin is not a porn advertisement.
It is a parody video.
Ok, got it.

I clicked it. I can attest that it’s not anything x rated. It’s basically a parody of a shake weight. I swear I remember seeing the video years ago and thinking “is this p0rn?” until I begrudgingly clicked play.

If he took the advice above there would be no need to follow that’s trend. I’m not sure it’s got any advantage on PG
