I enjoyed this elk. He is very unique in that he was a legitimate free range Texas Elk from the Davis Mountain herd. Contrary to popular belief Texas does and always has had a free range elk herd isolated in one small portion of far West Texas in the Davis Mountains.

Interestingly, Texas Parks & Wildlife disagrees that any elk in West Texas are part of a native Texas population, and so it considers them an "exotic" just like Aoudad sheep or Axis deer. As a result, they have no season or harvest protections at all. Fortunately, they are located on ranches throughout the Davis Mountain region where the land owners have become well aware of their value as a huntable species (amazing how that works). Several outfitters with access, offer highly prized and limited opportunities to take a "native" Texas bull.

You are absolutely correct. I think it may have to do with the fact that they would have to regulate them if they recognized them and they know that. Fortunately they don’t recognize them and allow land owners to manage them which is a much better deal for the animals. The population has really risen in the last decade or so.
On a similar note just about every year someone shoots one in the Canadian river somewhere up where I’m at. They follow the river out of New Mexico.

Nice mount, Erik. We hunted Aoudad last fall with Bubba Glossen near Valentine and learned about the elk herd out there. I was totally surprised to find out that some big elk come out of there. We saw some nice mulies, too. It was a great trip and we may go back to chase elk or deer.

I would love the opportunity to hunt there one day. I haven’t done that yet but it’s in my list.
