Compare Recoil

I have 2 416 Rigby’s the Ruger RSM kicks about 3/4 of what my 470 NE Merkel does, the CZ 550 about 1/2 of what my 470 does. My CZ 375 H&H a little less then my CZ 416, and my CZ 9.3x62 a bit less then my 375.

375......7
9,3 x 62....6
300 WM. ... 8
416 Rigby.....8,5
450…......9(458 WM)
470......10
I have fired all these rifles...the one I hate most on the range is the 300 WM.
Hunting in the bush I hardly notice the recoil on any rifle I shoot??
Seems my focus is elsewhere thank goodness.

I will only rate the ones that I have shot:

Ruger M77 - 300 Win Mag - 3 (pretty mild compared to everything else on the list)
Mauser M98 - 9,3x62 - 4
Winchester M70 - 375 H&H - 5
CZ 550 - 416 Rig - 10 (this was a 400 grain at 2,500 fps.)
450/400 - Never fired one but from what I hear it is only slightly harder than a .375 so maybe a 6?
Krieghoff double 470 - 8 (This is from firing two rounds so it may not be objective but I didn't think it was that bad.)

My beloved 500 Jeff, 570 gr @ 2350 don't even make the list!

Felt recoil is hard to define just from a list of calibers.

Proper rifle fit and balance go a long way in making a gun comfortable to shoot or not.

I had a Remington model 700 classic in 375 H&H and it was a terrible experience shooting this rifle, I have two 375 H&H rifles both ZKK 602 classic stocks, one semi custom the other original, the original has more felt recoil.

When you get into big bores fit and balance as well as correct weight are very important.

As for high speed high pressure cartridges(eg. Weatherby), well the sharp recoil due to case design and high pressure levels just plain make them uncomfortable to shoot for the average guy.

Stick to calibers you are comfortable with and ensure proper gun fit and balance and it will be happy hunting from there.

if you go to handloads.com, they have a recoil calculator that will give you a calculated value. Be sure to use an accurate gun weight, and they even have a side by side comparison using two different rifles to compare. You can add or lessen weights to see how much difference they would make. Swift bullets also gives representative recoil values on their web site for their factory ammo. Of course, keep in mind these are 'theoretical' computations, and perceived recoil by the shooter is what really matters. I can tell you this though, recoil is not your friend and never will be. David Tubb, who is a well known long ranch champion competition shooter has said that he would always shoot better if a rifle generated no recoil, and I think that is true of all shooters. The 'macho' attitude of some shooters who think carrying a hard kicking rifle shows their expertise, doesn't impress anyone. As we say in the United States Marine Corps rifleman's creed, "It is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count." The same is true in hunting, and maybe to add that in hunting, only good hits count. A big gun doesn't impress anyone, but good shooting is always noticed and is impressive. Just ask any PH. That said, obviously, some rare situations call for a large gun, but even then still, it is useless if you can not hit with it.

How is a .450/400 3" compared to 9,3x62 or 9,3x74R? Any experiences?

The question is one which can and cannot be answered in simple terms, and you will find everything you need to know in answers already posted but basically it comes down to this:
  1. The more powerful the round is, the heavier the recoil. This is pure physics, no mysteries.
  2. A faster load in a given calibre will tend to generate sharper recoil (snap vs shove). Again pure physics.
  3. Felt recoil for a given load is dependent on rifle weight, stock design and braked/unbraked. (For this reason 300 WM's have a rep for severe recoil)
  4. All .416's belt like beasts. - no exceptions.
  5. 9.3 x 62 is like a milder version of a .375H&H, but felt recoil may be equal as 9.3's are generally on shorter, lighter platforms.
  6. 9.3 x 62 and 9.3 x 74 are ballistically identical.
  7. Doubles tend to belt less because they are on average quite a bit heavier; however design and fit make a difference.
  8. If you are after a good all-rounder that doesn't belt too badly then look at a .338 Wm, .358 Norma or 9.3 x 62. (The new Sako 9.3 is also very nice)
  9. If looking for a relatively mild big game rifle then look at .458 WM or a .450 or .470 double
  10. Could be I overlooked a few Q's but I think that sums it up.

I've only shot a couple on that list, but I find that the bullet weight has significant affect on the recoil, even in the same cartridge. A light-for-caliber bullet seems to me to recoil considerably less than a heavy-for-caliber bullet. Examples: the recoil of a 200 grain bullet in a 338 win Mag is about the same as a 180 grain bullet in a 300 Win Mag. A 250 grain bullet in a 375 H&H is about the same as a 250 grain 338 win Mag. So my conclusion is that for the various cartridges on your list, there will be considerable variation depending on the bullet weight selected.

100%!
Also some reputed "hard hitters" are actually quite mild in a given rifle because they are built on magnum actions using magnum barrel profiles. For example felt recoil of a .338 WM in a Ruger M77 is about the same as 30-06 - but the same calibre in a lightweight rifle (see some of the European rifles) is pretty much unusable . One shot and you sell it!

One factor that I think is over looked is stock material. Now this is a relative new thing so to speak. The crappy plastic stock on my Rem700 375H&H reduces the felt recoil quite a bit. So much so that it kicks way less then the CZ550 I had in 375H&H although it is 2 pound lighter.

Hi everyone,

From your experience in general, How would you grade from 0 to 10 and giving 10 to 470, the recoil of:

300 Win Mag
9,3x62
375 H&H
416 Rig
450/400
470

300 Win Mag - Weatherby Vanguard plastic stock - 3-4
300 Win Mag - Browning A-bolt - 5-6
9.3x62 - CZ 550 FS - 3
375 H&H - Whitworth - 5
416 Rigby - CZ 550 - 7-8
416 Rigby - Ruger RSM - 9
458 Lott - CZ 550 - 6
458 Lott - Ruger RSM - 9.5

This is given 470 is a 10. Never shot one or the 450/400. All rifles I shoot sitting off the bench (club rules) so the big boomers tend to beat me up more than they would in off-hand shooting or typical hunting situation.

I would consider Mossberg 500 12g with 3" 1 oz slugs as a 6 or 7 (kicks and is loud), most .338WM as a 5-6, 7mm RM as a 4, 30-06 and 8x57 or similar as a 2-3 and 6.5x55 as a 1. 7x57 as a 1 to 1,5. .22LR say 0.2, .22 short as 0.1. ;)

So all the above is more my perceived/felt recoil. It is also just how I feel in general, from memory. At the range, when shooting some of these side-by-side, things become clearer as to their rating but it is also subjective. Some days I feel good, handling recoil and muzzle blast very well, some days not. Once shooting, one gets used to recoil as you shoot more, even on the same day, rifle may feel kicking less later on than during the initial shot. If you mess up somewhere along the lines with a rifle that kicks you, then any subsequent shots may feel hurting more ... so all these results may be easily skewed. Shooting lighter rifle after a big hitter also seems to make the lighter caliber feel even lighter than usual.

I also found the Ruger stocks the worst of all time, for me. I never got such unpleasant recoil as out of the two RSMs in 416 Rigby and 458 Lott. The 9.3 seems to be very soft and quiet and I always think it kicks less than 30-06. But I think when I shoot them one after the other, the 30-06 is even softer, hence leaving the 9.3 as a 3. Overall I find the plastic stock on the Vanguard soaking up a lot of recoil, making this 300 WM actually pleasant to shoot. With a good muzzle brake I swear it is like a .243, so around 2.

Most people do not find the ruger stocks comfortable. i think the reason is fairly obvious just from looking at them.
i own a few, including a .338WM which is my "go-to". It belted pretty badly in its original form but is a lot better with a Pachmayr decelerator pad (which is how they should come). Still, its not a good stock design, especially for heavy kickers.

I did have two Heym SR 20, one in .375 H & H, die other in 9,3x62. I'm convinced there was a difference in recoil, however, well, I can't remember it. In the bush I didn't feel any difference. Was to excited...

I think my 30-06 belts me a lot more than my 375HH. More like a sharp jab than a push like the 375. Then again I'm comparing an 8 1/2 lb MRC 06 and 180g TSX to my 11 lb 375HH Win Safari Express and 235g TSX . Even the 350g TSX feels lighter. All three loads are about 2 to 2 1/2 g below max. Probably 2 1/2 lb makes a difference, too.

Interesting subject as always.
Interesting post from Rule .303, I don’t like crappy plastic stocks much. I don’t find Ruger factory stocks comfortable either. Boat paddle, varmint or timber sporter. I did have a Ruger .300wm with a Ramline stock and pachmyr pad I think. It seemed ok. Don’t know why I sold it. Wanted something different.
What do people think of Bell and Carlson stocks on big bores?
I don’t mind shooting my CZ550 in 375H&H but i think there is a Bell and Carlson stock that was fitted on an all weather version at some point, maybe it’s available aftermarket.
Mine is the American styled straight comb walnut.
