I’m trying to place a 2-7x40 Leupold scope on a model 70 Winchester in 375H&H.
Problem is that the action is so big that I cannot seem to get the scope set up properly - eye relief- etc etc.
I could fit a 1-6 power but don’t feel like spending $2k on a Swarovski z6 etc.
I really want something bigger in magnification than 1-5 in Leupold.
Any suggestions?
I don’t use the Winchester much but don’t feel like buying another brand etc.

If your problem is with not being able to bring the scope back far enough with the front bell impeded by your scope ring, I understand the problem.

I shoot Warne rings and bases. The bases are Weaver style. If this is the type of base your using, you need an extended front base. It will "hang" over the bolt opening a bit, but allow you to bring the scope further back. And not to worry, it will not interfere with ejecting the brass.

Thank you I’ll get gunsmith to do that.
I think he was going to put extension on.
The top up of cartridges was mentioned. But thanks for that advice.
I have not had this issue previously as I buy Sakos.
I’m looking at Winchester safari in 416 Remington magnum. Will I have the same problem?
I might look at the Kimber Caprivi for a 416.

Same problem a couple months ago...Got rid of Leupold mounts and went to Talley...I also shortened the wood stock so it fit me perfectly....Picatinny rail might be another solution if shell will eject...good luck.

Likely with the M70. The Safari Express is the same action for the .375HH, .416Rem, and .458 Win.

I figured that.
What’s your opinion of the Caprivi?

Stock been adjusted to accommodate a thicket and better recoil pad.

I will discuss with gunsmith Monday afternoon.
It’s a second hand Winchester and only the second Winchester bolt action I’ve ever had.
Thanks for your input.

What’s your opinion of the Caprivi?

Have seen them, never owned or fired one. Sure seem a fine rifle, but a bit pricy.

Thanks for your contribution.
Any suggestions on a rifle in 416 Rigby or Remington or ruger?

I'm a M70 guy, through and through. But if I were to look for something not in a M70, my first look would be at a Ruger RSM. They don't make them anymore and it's too bad, it's a very nice rifle.

You can find them used and it seems like the prices have been dropping somewhat. For the money it's a lot of rifle.

Here's one: https://www.gunsinternational.com/g...e/ruger-77-rsm-416-rigby.cfm?gun_id=100901679

I’m in Australia so it’s a problem to obtain only because of the paperwork.
Thanks. It’s really great to get such expert advice and I thank you.

Heym Martini express or Dakota 76 Safari in .416 Rigby.

I never thought of the Dakota. Thank you I will look into those.

Another option is to use a Picatinny base or rail.

There are lots of mount options for M70's. You could also try a Leupold VX6 in the 1-6 version. It's a lot of scope for the money, especially the illuminated reticle ones. And on clearance now.

Offset rings would be my answer.

G'day Ray , i have the win 70 in 416rem mag , it's fitted with leupold bases and quick detach rings , fitted with a leupold vx3 1.25-5 x 20. Have no worries with sight picture etc , same rifle as your 375 , i have not tried a larger scope but , i don't require it on the 416.

^^^ this ^^^

I use the extended front base from warne on my M70 375 H&H.. it gives me the extra room I need to have several optic options..

Currently I have a zeiss 3-9x42 on the rifle.. but I previously had a leupold 3-9x40 on it.. and I have played with a zeiss 1-4x on it as well.. there was enough room using the extended base to make all three choices work well in terms of getting proper eye relief, not rubbing against the bell, etc..

Either the Heym Martini or Dakota are great rifles but not in the same class as the Winchester or RSM. These rifles run about $9000 or $10,000.
