Bug infested shipment

Just trying to let you know whats going to happen, Africa once your back home is not quite as accommodating as when your there. Go bomb the stuff and see what savagable ......from the skins send pics, after the bomb shake them out and use air compressor to clean them then talk to me .

HEY, I just re-read some of your post, SHOW me pic of these white bald spots...IT my be crap fleshing and salting in camp on the PH's side...Bug leave different marks that bad salt slipping
Bug damage will leave a stubble of the hair like a 5 o'clock shadow , smooth white skin is SLIP, BAD SALTING in camp !!!

First off a lot of crates are not opened by USFW or USDA just to many of them, ....................

This is why every last crate gets inspected up here in Canada now. We have to pay for it.
They must have run into too many of these scary crates.

Hope you can pull this one out of the ditch.

The leg bones are all greasy, and have turned grey on much of the bone.

Brick, there was a BIG lobbying push by some taxidermy companies in Canada to make ask those shipments go thru there studios first. It was minimally about the crates and bugs but mush more about the MONEY !! and a monopoly.

What a nightmare. So sorry to hear about it.. This is the type of post from Dennis that you print out and review before you go to africa.... What a PITA
Bruce

Dennis, Is there anything I can do to rehydrate the cape on one or two to straighten them out to get a better look at them? They are tanned, but they extremely stiff and rolled up.The marks are on hides from both camps I hunted with. Salted by each. 1 being the outfitter as well.

No instructions sent with them? Okay base line rehydration....But get ready to roll them up after this and freeze them.. Freezing is only way to keep then after you do this..Get big bucket...bathtub. One handful of salt for every 5 gallons of tepid water not hot not cold , little under your body temp use your hand to get it there. Just barely warm...add the salt...mix it up , soak the skins for 1 HOUR , ONLY ONE HOUR then hang t0 drip dry for 15 minutes....squeeze then out...roll them up...put in plastic bag and put in a COOL place fridge, basement anywhere cool....let sweat for 12 hours....take out look them over take your pictures re roll them up , DONT FOLD and put back in plastic bag remove air and seal then FREEZE Them. I have to do this on every skin.....

Sorry to hear this about your trophies. My crate landed in Chicago yesterday and will arrive on Wednesday. Certainly feeling nervous after reading this.

Man, this is not a happy situation. I've had all of my trophies done in RSA by the same taxidermist. I'm wondering how many accompany the hides, bodies or skulls to the taxidermist and look over his work and shipping operation. Could this problem have been prevented by doing this? I have done this every time, I know my guy well and we sit down and discuss every technical aspect of each mount. Five shipments and so far, so good.

That's the unfinished stuff having to go through an "Approved facility". Even if inspected and clean. It sure is about money.
We have to pay for an CFIA (our USDA) inspection on each crate before you ever get to that bill.

Dennis, in your spare time :ROFLMAO:, can you start another thread on this topic (with pictures) to help educate hunters on the types/reults of typical damage like this. It might really help stop the :A Me You:.
Thanks

Sonny,
How about please naming some of the names? Like which taxidermist in Africa? etc and maybe save some of your fellow hunters from a repeat of your nightmare. I truly feel for you as I have said in several previous post dip/pack/ship/taxidermy in africa is the biggest rip off and nightmare. And as dennis said once you are home and they have the money they are not near as "acommadating and nice".

Buckdog I think sonny wants to try a resolve the issue first before naming and shaming as I understand it!

Dennis has about summed it up. I was also going to say DONT TAKE THAT CRATE IN IT'S CURRENT SHAPE to another taxidermy shop and infest them also. Maybe ALL is not lost as some items might be fixable. They might not be the pristine capes every taxidermist dreams of from Africa, but few ever are. Dennis' finish guy might be the best out there, If anyone can cover a few botches, he can.

I would like everyone to know that this issue is being resolved. The outfitter and the taxidermist are both stepping up and I am being taken care of to my satisfaction. I will keep you posted.

Good. I suspect they don't want to see their names on this website or farcebook.:(

Very happy they are working to make things right. Mistakes can happen to everyone no matter how conscientious they are. Now that they are attempting to make things right as much as they can, how about letting us in on who is involved. I am looking toward booking in 2019 and would highly consider an outfitter willing to right a mistake or oversight!

That’s awesome if they take care of you! Best of luck!!
