For ridiculous reasons, counterproductive even to their policy, you can't easily import parts to Canada from the US. Does anyone know a non-US source for actions that would take the 500 a-square? I have a barrel, so I thought I might give it a go.

Tam DI, Pheroze is a Canadian that is into unique / oddball calibers. He can either steer you in the right direction or knows someone who can. If he doesn't reply to this thread I'd be surprised.

Looks like a cool cartridge. I am not sure I will be of much help but here are some thoughts:

I don't know where to order it from, but I can recommend a gunsmith who might: Christian Lemieux at http://lemieuxarmuriers.com/en may be the right fellow. I believe he builds on many different types including Granite Mountain. He is building my 400 H&H which required sourcing the reamer and a one off barrel from Douglas Barrels.

My other thought is to see if you could ream a 460 or 378 Weatherby - I found this https://firearmscanada.com/ads/weatherby-mark-v-deluxe-460-wby-like-new/

I believe it is based on that. But then it would be a push feed if that is an issue.

How about www.**NOT**PERMITTED** to help with the export/import. I have found them to be easy to work with.

Good luck. I like the idea of the cartridge. . Let us know how the project goes!

Thanks Pheroze, you provided him with a place to start. Hopefully Tam DI will keep everyone informed as the project progresses.

But a used rifle and import it from the states, quite painless from what I’ve seen. CZ550 or a MRC PH model would make a great action.

Tradex carries Magnum Zastava actions

Some great suggestions, so far, thanks all.

--------------------------------------

I was for using the Zastava if it is good enough for the job. While researching it the impression I got was that it was not regarded as an actual magnum action, but the standard action opened up for somewhat larger cartridges. I think I could probably make up a smaller 50 on it, there are some versions that will take off from where the 50 Alaskan leaves off without going to the furthest extreme, and those might be an option in the Zastava. I would be very grateful to those who have pushed the Zastava, for their impressions on how that worked out.

(Anyone have an opinion on a Zastava action for a 6.5x55? As to it's size primarily)

----------------------------

I didn't really want to get into discussing laws as that gets boring for others pretty fast. I can spend double what it is worth, on paperwork, to import an action from the US. And I suppose I would do that if I had to. I could also cut up a 3K rifles, but importing an action would be cheaper. If something like the Zastava action is an option I can get the whole rifle done for about 700 dollars, which makes it a fun project, and cheap also. I'm sure in the not too distant future, people will look at our current laws, as senseless as they are, wistfully.

MRC PH might be worth the effort? Don't know what it costs, but it does seem to have been purpose built for what I am attempting.

Dumoulin Chinese action is also available from Tradex. Anything good about it compared to the Zastava, it is not a magnum, but it might be more or less open to the Roto Rooter treatment if one could examine the pair of them.

My understanding of the Zastava action is it is basically a standard length action opened up.

I would contact irunguns.ca, I've used them for a rifle import, and it was cheap and painless. Mind you I bought the rifle from their US counterpart, so I don't think they charged a fee. But I doubt it would cost much to get an action across the boarder, maybe $100 plus GST/duties.

Find the action you want and get Prophet River or Irun Guns to import it for you. Cost is under $200, you can import yourself but you need a US dealer with a export license and it’s usually more expensive.

CZ 550 Magnum is not a standard length action opened up. I have 4 of them. One is a 450 Rigby, one is a 416 Rigby. Other two are awaiting barrels.

CZ550 would be my choice.

I will take a photo later, I have some 510 Cartridges. I will place one on the follower to give you an idea.

Below is an Enfield action in 510 A Square, Ugly but gets the job done.

The Montana action is 1700 dollars, +++ Which is OK for a full blast custom.

It cost 200 for the paperwork plus probably another 100 for shipping. That is on the barrel+the action+the scope+cases+etc.., any part that qualifies, which is why I am interested in non-US sources. You can easily spend enough to pay for a rifle fighting the paper.

One way to get it done without lifting a finger, is to get a rifle in the US that you like, send it for reboring, and then through to the Irunguns or Prophet. You could, say, get a Ruger 416 opened out to 470, for a only a few hundred extra. I haven't fully worked out how that scenario is doomed, but worst case it could be done trans-border for 500 or so. (of course bears aside, I am not sure that 470-416 Ruger would be useful for much, but that is another story)

Just a FYI. From what I understand about the magnum zastava actions from Tradeex they are regular long actions with the bolt face opened more. They will not fit a 375 length cartridge. The 375’s have been “opened” by zastava. So you may have to buy a complete 375 and strip the parts off of that.

Another choice is have CZ custom shop build what you want and get Prophet River to bring it in. I did this for my 450 Rigby a couple of years ago.

Yep. Think of the Mark X actions, just a standard length with the front ramp chewed away by beavers. I have two of these things.
