Hi all.
I'm new here and just wanted to ask advice. I'm born in S.A. but grew up in Zimbabwe. I was fortunate enough to work in a couple of hunting camps after i left school. I know alot of the ins and outs of what is required. From a very young age i knew my life would be involved somehow in the hunting industry. Well i hoped it would anyways. I had to move back to SA in 2002. I met David Sutherland back then and so badly wanted to do my PH course but unfortunately couldn't afford it. Well 14 years later I'm now in Nylstroom (Modimolle) and can afford the PH course I've long desired to do and it's only 40kms away. The advice I ask for is this. Can one become a PH if he is say a little introverted? Don't get me wrong here. I enjoy the company of people and if you get me talking on the right topics you won't get me to shut up! I'm made to be on the little quieter side unfortunately. I speak when I need to. Is that a big problem? When i worked in camps in Zim i was under the PH's wing and didnt communicate much with clients. Although this is the downside my work ethic is still strong. I know the demanding requirements for the position. My passion for nature and the outdoors has never changed and would gladly put my life on the line for someone else if that day came.
For you who have been in this business for a long time, is there space for someone like me? I would appreciate blunt honesty guys (and ladies).

Thanks!

Welcome to AH !

Nothing wrong with a quiet PH.

Yes!! As an outfitter, I actually enjoy having one quiet and one talkative PH'S/appies.

Welcome aboard. I'd think you would more or less have to adapt to each of your clients. While one may like to have a "chatter box" along the next one could be like yourself, a quiet gentleman. Nothing wrong with either one.

Welcome to AH Gauge! By your introduction you seem to be a good communicator, you may just use fewer words which is not be a bad quality in my opinion. I think that this industry requires more people skills than anything else...

From Google search result on people skills: In general, good people skills are defined as the ability to listen, to communicate and to relate to others on a personal or professional level. Good people skills also extend to include problem-solving abilities, empathy for others and a willingness to work together toward the common good.

Welcome to AH!

It takes all kinds in every business and hunting is no different. You might have a harder time on the Outfitter side of the equation because of the sales aspect. On the field side, you'll be just fine.
As Simon noted, he makes use of both...,,

Again thanks to everyone. Defenately feeling more confident!
Appreciate it.

I take it that you will do your PH course with David?
I really enjoyed the time that I spent with him when I did my PH course - he learned me quite a bit and it was the best money I ever spent.
Good luck!!

I'm most defenately going to do it Boela! Dave was actually in a bad car accident so he is a bit out of shape at the moment but will be up to scratch in the new year. Can't wait!

Welcome and best of luck!

@ Gauge: Numanri phoned me shortly after his accident , I was quite shocked when I heard of it. If you search the site you will see the that I created a thread regarding it.
If you need help or tips in regards with your PH course , don't hesitate to contact me, I will help you any time.
Regards,
Boela.

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ
