SOUTH AFRICA: Dugga Boy In The Salt Cutting Edge Bullets Get An A

Great report, great hunt, great animals, great memories!

Very happy for you and your wife. Can't wait to see the items to be made from your buff's back skin.

Those zebra will give you your money's worth, eh??

Tim

The brochure didn't say Zebra were tough to get, especially for this out of shape hunter! Thank you, and I will post pics when everything is done.

Congrats on a great hunt!

Just this morning I received a pic from Africa from my PH's Boss. I had left him a few of my loaded Raptors in .458 Win Mag. Yesterday he had to shoot a large buff caught in a snare. The only shot he had was head on, and the Raptor penetrated nearly 100% end to end! Here is the pic of the recovered Raptor retrieved from the animals rear end, and he was absolutely impressed that the peddles exited the buff on the off end from the sides I believe. I would say the load worked out nicely and once again very impressed with the
bullets!

That's pretty much exactly what they're supposed to look like and what they're supposed to do.

So you can imagine now that the reminders are coming in to bring them some at DSC, Lol! I'm a fan boy now, sorry Hornady! I still use the Hornady solids, but for "expanding" it is now CEB Raptors.

CEB has been in the past and I'm guessing will be at DSC again this year. I promise you that if you try CEB's solids they'll shoot to virtually the same POI with virtually the same load as the Raptors. If that shot used above this week was with the solids, I believe the bullet would've exited.

I am probably going to make the switch eventually. Believe it or not the Hornady solids are hitting very close to point of impacts to my Raptors. I do plan on ordering the CEB solids though.

Well we are back from S.A. with a lifetime of memories and full of pride. We arrived in Johannesburgh with no clue what we were doing. My 4457 forms were not stamped in the USA as Houston Hobby Airport does not have customs, and in Atlanta they would sign them without seeing them. Lesson learned as I almost didn't get to keep my rifles in Africa. Thankfully the police accepted what US cash I had left in my pocket and I was on my way to Phalaborwa in Limpopo, South Africa!

I know this is an old thread but...first and foremost great report and congrats on your buff and PG!

Having booked my first trip when I read things like the above I feel obligated to ask so I have the knowledge to try and make my first trip as smooth as possible.

Never flown internationally and certainly not with guns so heres my silly question...I'm assuming from this portion of the post that's its standard when leaving the US (in my case it will likely be from ATL), they check your paperwork for your guns as well as the gun inspection upon check in? Or is the customs you mentioned at another point in the process, possibly before the airport where you have to take your guns and paperwork to be inspected prior to your trip? It seems critical to have the 4473s inspected and apparently stamped by CBP, just making sure I understand the process so I can do it correctly and smoothly. Thanks!

The form number is 4457 not 4473. You will need to take your rifle(s) you intend to take with you to a CBP office and fill out the 4457 there and have it signed by a CBP officer prior to your trip. And depending on the airline, you may need to do this several weeks in advance.

Each airline has it's own process and even each airport seems to do things a little differently. But if you're going on Delta, it's merely show up with your rifles and yes the 4457s at the airport. They will want you to put a red card in the rifle case that you're confirming the gun(s) are unloaded.

From there one way or another, the rifles will need to go to TSA. And you will go there with them. Again each officer in each airport seems to have their own way of doing things. Some can be very edgy about this while others have been there and done that and are calm. But in the end they want to make sure you don't have an explosive and rifles are unloaded. I personally remove the bolts from the rifles and have them in there own spot in the case.
I also put my ammunition in a different and obviously locked case.

So long as all is well, this should be the last you deal with your rifles until you get to Africa. But be prepared. My last trip, TSA called on us at the gate to confirm we were traveling with rifles. Yah, that seemed stupid to me too since we had already met with their colleagues. But have your 4457's handy, stay calm and be polite and all will be fine.

Now having said all of that, again I was presuming you will be on Delta. But it's been awhile since I've flown on Delta, so this is certainly subject to correction. And, things change a little in the process with other airlines.

I recommend once you're ready to book your flights you check back here on AH to get the lowdown on the airline and itinerary.

My bad on the form number! Like many of you, I fill out lots of 4473s :ROFLMAO:

I've flown many times domestically with firearms, like you said every airport is different. The visit to the CBP office with 4457s is what I wanted to make sure I had straight, makes sense now! And I will be sure they get stamped/signed during that visit thanks to this post!

Appreciate the info, hope to one day be able to be giving info in africa hunts and travel, until then I cant thank you all enough, I can only imagine how many hiccups my first trip would have without this site!

I shot my first zebra in Botswana while hunting blue wiltabeest, it was a long walk to get a good shot.
