to the original question... between the 3 chambering's I would choose the 577 NE. I have fired a 600 NE and it was awesome but the guns weight made carrying it out In the bush sound unpleasant. a 577 NE weighing 12-13 pounds would provide more then enough stopping power without being ridiculously heavy.

as for the 500 being suitable for his grandma, I would like to see his grandma shoot my 505 Gibbs! I would consider the big 500s to be plenty powerful to serve as back up rifles.

that 700 NE is one sweet rifle but lord are those things heavy! i handled one at the SCI show that was just under 20 pounds and it was tough just to keep on target let alone carry for any length of time.

that second video is stupid... give a bunch of people who have no idea how to use a large bore rifle one of the most powerful rifles on the planet and see what happens. that kinda stuff gives all large bore shooters a bad name and degrades our hobby.

I have read through all the posts by now and keep on stopping at the lovely picture of Elizabeth Hurley....

Seriously though, I have thought and looked at it from every angle and have come to a very simple conclusion.... They are just not practical.
Cost of ammunition, weight vs carry, price of fire arm (forget about Ivan Carter... Do we honestly believe he bought it with $25k of his hard earned money? It's a sponsor)

No matter which way I cut it it will take allot for me to be convinced that carrying the 600 or 700 is a prudent choice for myself while elephant hunting... I just don't buy it.

There is a reason why 70% - 80% of operational PH's don't carry them.....

I would probably love to have one...... but to be honest, I'll stick to my trusty 3, 470, 500 and 460 weatherby.

The 577 is an awesome cartridge , no doubt about it. They're not necessarily lighter than 600's though. a Verney 600 weighs just over 13 pounds .

a 13 pound 600 NE would generate some serious recoil and muzzle climb! here is a video of me shooting a 600 NE that weighed around 18 pounds if memory serves me right and i was firing 10% reduced loads.

I have a soft spot for the .600 myself...but I think John Taylor hit the nail when he stated that there was never the slightest need for it... as long as the .577 already existed.

@TMS simon thats ASTON Martin............thanks for the vote of confidence in presuming it wasnt miss hurley it looked good for a while .....but yeah you are correct it drove great and sounded fantastic with the roof down and sports exhaust blaring was a few years ago now though.........more into my d/c cruiser these days

No , not really . My 6kg Verney produces around the same visible recoil as in the clip you posted. Very manageable. My 16 year old son shoots it. Nothing serious. What make was the one you shot ?

While visting Verney Carron in St. Ettiene in France the first time I was taken on a tour of the facility. Jerome asked me if I'd like to shoot a 600. I said yes , but was slightly nervous. Jerome , probably sensing my slight nervousness , took the first shot. easily , unphased. He cannot weigh more than 85 kg. I was amazed. I then shot the rifle and was surprised by the relatively low perceived recoil. I say low , not as in 375 low , but low when comparing this beast to my and other 500's that I have shot. Its a big caliber , there's going to be recoil , but its smooth. No weatherby Shock. Well made rifles those Verney's.

Gee whizz i was in the field for 4 days and missed my chance to comment on a Land Rover joke....O well next time like the land rovers oil leaks just wait they will arrive....Anyway I like the answers and agree i trust my 470NE but if if a 577ne passed by me at the right price well lets see, if it came with a land rover that is another story i agree with @spike t into my cruiser more that sports cars now..like what was once said sports cars are fun to drive but to own sheesh leave it to them owners.

I have no experience with these big doubles. Only what I have read. The .577 & .600, I am sure are great stoppers. The .700 is more of a novelty rifle than anything. Ammo costs at least $50 a round, so who can afford to shoot it, unless you are well heeled.
Besides....does anybody want to carry a 20 pound .700 NE rifle for 10 miles while tracking Elephant on a daily basis. It would feel like a 50 pounds by the end of the day.

I will take Grandma Sullivan's .500 NE
