Looking for a Photo of an Eland Mount

A little while back I saw a photo of a different style eland mount than I have ever seen before.

It was the head on a shield. Like a skull on a shield, but with the hide and the full head taxidermied and it was cut in a way it laid flat on the shield like a skull would do.

It was an interesting way to do an eland to preserve the mop but without taking the full space of a shoulder mount eland.

However, now when I try to search for it, I can't find any examples of it. The one I saw was well done. I don't know that I would like that style mount on many animals, but I remembered liking it on the eland.

If anyone has a mount like that, or has success finding photos of one, I'd love if you would post them.

Hmm... I think @Philip Glass might have had something like that made. At least I have a vague memory of it being posted here a couple of years ago. But.. the more I think of it, it may have been an Oryx - mounted as Euro mount, but with the skin attached. And more of a skull cap than a full Euro mount - i.e. cut above the eye sockets.

That could maybe work for eland as well.

I’m interested to see this also.

I remember I was at a gun show and came up to an African outfitters tent. He has a pedestal mounted old blue eland bull at the front. I fell in love with them from that moment. Any way you present them they’re fantastic in my view.

That's similar to what I was looking for, but not quite. The style I remember seeing had the full head. Like it was cut either just before the ears or right after the ears and included the lower jaw.

Anybody got other examples, eg eland, kudu, etc? Would love to see them, not much space in small apartment.

I really like Euro Mounts. But on something like an eland where the mop can be a large portion of the "trophy", it would save a ton of room and still preserve what makes the animal unique. And on some other animals where they have distinct facial markings it would be a cool way to preserve that as well.

Having a bunch of full shoulder eland mounts is a tall order in an average house. I wish I would have saved the photo of the eland I saw mounted this way. I didn't think it would be so hard to relocate.

I know exactly what you’re talking about! It’s called a flat-back neck mount (or face-cut shield mount). A buddy of mine did this with his Cape Buffalo because he didn't have the 4 feet of wall clearance for a full shoulder mount. It honestly looks incredible and very classic "old-school safari," plus you keep that awesome matted forehead hair and dewlap without taking over the whole room.

Fantastic, that sounds good. I have been searching and searching but did (also) not find anything online. And even flat-back neck mount does not give an links. I also do not have 4 feet of wall, and will with a bit of luck shoot my (first!) buffalo in a weeks time. Any chance your buddy could take a couple of photos and you could share them with us? Plus, do you know if the actual skull is underneath, in case one regrests it and want the euro mount instead?

I think from a couple things you mentioned we might be talking about different things, but I'm unsure. You mentioned it would preserve the dewlap, and the mount I am thinking of did not keep that.

I am thinking you mean a mount where they cut right at the area where the neck meets the shoulder and removes the big shoulder area on more modern mounts.

The one I am speaking of, that I saw a while back, cuts right where the neck meets the base of the skull and only keeps the head itself.

This has gs beside the dart board at my PH's game room / bar. It's really striking.and also let's my imagination kick in on the rest of the fine old beast. It made such an impression on me, I ordered the same thing. Great choice, My Friend!

The picture doesn't capture the ruff like it should, but it about 2.5" long and thick as a boot brush!

Here is one that was hanging next to the bar that we saw and my father is having done on his eland on our recent trip to byseewah/shona safaris. The local taxidermist called it a mask mount

Well, we will see how it goes. I explained what I was looking for to the taxidermist. I couldn't ever find the picture I was looking for. It might turn out as I have in my head or it might end up different, either way, it will be an experience.
