Rigby PH Big Game in 404 Jeffery

What an awesome looking rifle, I absolutely love the color tone of your Rigby. Congratulations on a great purchase, and good luck pursuing buffalo with it next year!

Beautiful rifle. I love my PH as much as the regular BG.

Nice looking rifle. Looking forward to seeing a picture of it leaning against the side of a lot of DG.

She's a beaut Clark! Congrats on the new add!

Let me know about the recoil when you get a chance to shoot it. I am looking for a Big 5 rifle. I was in a bad accident last year and badly shattered my right arm. I have some hardware so its strong but my hand is weak. When I shoot my 375 the trigger guard hits my fingers. 404 might be as big as I can go.

Might want to look at a suppressor
Cuts recoil by half

I was surprisingly amazed at the recoil in a good way! I am not sure what the Rigby PH BGR in 404 weighs, but it feels rather heavy in a good way especially with the Swaro Z8i+ on it. As I have said before, I think it will become my favorite of my 4 Rigby's given it will take anything on this earth up to and including elephant.

Ha! I suffer from the same disease…
Franz, you know you really should get a match set of the PH models, one in 450 Rigby and one in 404J. Send that ol' hog's ear of a 416 BGR north to Alaska, I'll take care of it for you. I mean...I still love my rifle, so damn accurate, and thought it was so damn pretty...that was until I saw yours.

Out of curiosity is there a reason the front sight sits about an inch or so back from the muzzle? Seems like most bolt guns I see/own have the front sight all the way at the end of the muzzle. The only rifle I own that are that way as well are my older savage 99s from 1920s. Just curious if there’s a reason or if it’s an esthetic decision.

My savage for comparison:

It was funny this morning I was looking over a 416 Taylor that is coming to auction and had to go remind myself about its origins, which made me laugh to myself just a bit and think of the 404J. It was google-described as a 1970's cartridge, born of the goal to fit 416 Rigby-like ballistics into a standard action, dispensing with the need for the true magnum length Mauser action. And went on to talk about he success in reaching near Rigby downrange results. I was like hhmmmmm.....ALL of that sounds like the 404J with just a smidge more diameter.

So in 1970's a gent developed a cartridge that would fit same action and perform like the one Jeffery created in 1905.

As for recoil, I have to say that the Rigby stocks, with that chubby-wide silvers pad, and the additional weight of their barrel contour, really does a great job and soaking up felt recoil. I found my 416 BGR more pleasant to shoot than a 375HH Dakota I had at the time. Neither are bad, but was shocked initially at slight the recoil was in comparison to expectations.

Love it

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is kdp59935@gmail.com in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
