425 Westley Richards (Maharajah)

Because they are not allowed to. Private ownership of firearms is long gone in India. A lot of classic British guns & rifles that are in Australia now came out of India when the ban came into force.

Reminds me of the Australian gent that bought a beautiful double in 450-400 with a gold gaur on each lock. The left barrel shot fractionally high.
He got talking to an Indian gent at a convention about hunting. The gent related a story of his grandfather being woken three times by his man servant because of a tiger in the garden. All they had was a kerosene lamps and the gent shat at the tiger. This happened two more times during the night. The grandfather oiled the gun after the last time and went back to bed.
Next morning he was awakened by the man servant who was very excited only to find three dead tigers.
The man asked the Indian gent if he remembers the gun and he went on to describe it in detail complete with the fact that one barrel shot slightly higher than the other. The gun had been disposed of because of new laws and the Indian gent never saw it again.
The new owner told him he thinks he has it now and when he described the two gold gaur the gent was amazed that it was more than likely his grandfather's gun and was happy that it was still in use. Unfortunately he had to return to India that day so never saw it.

Elmer may have shot a 10 foot bear with a .333OKH magnum BUT he killed his world record bear with a 35 WHELEN loaded with 270gn projectiles.

Bob - That’s interesting . My 450/400 ex Maharana of Udaipur has a Gaur engraved on the underside of the action although not in gold. Having said that there is a a lot of gold on the barrels and action. Probably not the same rifle but Gaur ( and tigers) were obviously intended quarry for these types of rifles . Cheers

I'm new here, but I bet if I stay around long enough I'll learn that the 35 Whelen won the West, preserved the Union, served in two world wars and countless other regional conflicts, killed Bin Laden, was the longarm of choice of Billy Dixon and Carlos Hathcock and would have saved Custer had he and his troops been so armed. What a round! :D

PS: The Maharajah gets my vote as AH Gun of the Year, hands down.

I knew I was an Elmer Kieth fan for a good reason.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
