Good Gun Deals This Week

Cabela’s has adopted a policy of listing the rifle using the name on the receiver regardless even if there are the custom maker’s marks on the rifle.

I bought a Winchester Model 70 .416 Rem from an online Cabela’s listing. The rifle had unusually nice wood and non-standard sights, easily worth the few hundred they asked for over others on gunbroker. Turns out it was a full custom build by a well respected smith with his logo on the barrel. When picking it up, I asked the guy at the counter why they had not listed it as a custom and he explained the policy.
Sounds like a way to get a custom rifle at dollars for dimes....quarters, anyway. As long as it is a desirable caliber and not some unknown wildcat.

Two Heym 89B's NIB for sale in Germany...

500 NE: https://egun.de/market/item.php?id=20161906 -- 29K

470 NE: https://egun.de/market/item.php?id=20161876 -- 19.5K

Tarrifs will run you an additional 15% on the purchase price, and figure about $2k for import fees to the States, and six months to complete the process.

@Whit I think these are good values. I cannot see the 470NE, but the 500NE has an extended top tang and wood upgrades.

If it were me, I would calculate the price in Euros, plus the 15% tariff, plus the 1500 Euros for import, plus I'd set aside a VAT allocation. Maybe there is none, maybe you get it back, maybe you never do.

All that said, it sounds like about $43,000-$48,000 for that 500NE that is ready right now. Not a terrible deal at all.

@rookhawk, I punched the numbers in USD. That's 29K USD and 19.5K USD, which actually makes both a very good deal. The German sales price listed includes VAT. Probably not a terrible idea to set aside a bit of cash for VAT, however.

By my calculations, about $35,000 USD for the .500 NE all-in and $24,500 for the .470 NE all-in.

Price includes VAT - that’s generally how VAT works. If for export, you may get that back, so its not an additional allocation you set aside as a foreign buyer.

Interesting, I have not heard that one might receive VAT back. Would that be specific to Germany or across Europe?

All across Europe (EU), but it's only in theory. There are many steps, hurdles, and "mistakes" made by officials over there that will result in you not receiving your VAT refund. VAT is a Value Added Tax within the EU, so if something is shipped outside of the EU, it cant "add any value" within the area. When you're physically in Europe you have to provide your purchase receipts, fill out forms, get them stamped at your last point of exit, and then present them PLUS the items to a customs official to receive your VAT back. If you mistakenly packed them in your luggage and already checked your bags...too bad for you (me).

I suppose ordering online and having it shipped overseas may result in a better VAT refund experience...or not.

It is still such a hurdle to get the VAT refunded (often improperly assessed to foreign buyers from the inception ), that I have stopped screwing with seeking refunds as it just increases my tension.

I absolutely do not need to buy a 7mm Rem Mag with a 26" barrel right now. But left-handed Winchester Model 70 rifles built in New Haven, CT that are mint in box don't pop up very often anymore and when they do the prices are sometimes absurd. It's a model that I'm really fond of. The one listed on GB right now for $1,500 is calling to me like a Sirens' song. It would be nice if someone would make this thing disappear...

I personally have seen this rifle that just sold. Awesome rifle and worked on by JJ, so already vetted by the expert...

At that price, if you can stomach the joys of U.S. import paperwork and there aren’t any surprise “fees” lurking in the shadows, I’d call it okay, not exactly a steal. Let’s be honest, you’re forking over a solid 6–7 grand just for the brand name, the hype, and the marketing fairy dust.

As long as you’re not buying it with dreams of flipping it later, and you can live with the idea that when your hunting days are behind you, you’ve at least had your fun — then sure, why not? Just remember, at this level, you’re paying as much for bragging rights as for ballistic performance. That is assuming you are pondering buying these rifles. IMO, of course.

Saw an FN in 375 H&H was put on Clearance and had the price dropped by $300 to $1,299 at a Cabela's in Pennsylvania. LOP spacers & a large pad makes for some adjustability. If I shot right-handed, I'd trim the butt down to something a bit more svelte...and possibly red. :D

Since it was a good deal & I posted that link a month ago, I would be surprised if it was still available. It's too bad the expired link doesn't indicate which store it was in so you could double-check. Like I said in the original post, if I didn't shoot southpaw, I would have seriously considered grabbing it.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
