Trying for pics on the barrel cooler

Did you notice a big difference? I've seen those before and just wondered if they help.

I use an electric air pump for inflatables ($20). It has an on board rechargeable battery and I attach the output to some rubber tubing. I bring lunch bucket cooler with some ice in it. When I'm ready to cool the barrel, I put the downstream end of the rubber tube in the chamber, turn the pump on, set it on the ice and close the cooler lid (of course it doesn't close completely because the air hose is coming out of it). It actually makes the barrel cold, first at the breach and then at the muzzle.

Do you worry that cooling it too quickly could have a negative effect? I’m thinking of what happens when you dunk hot metal in cold water.

No. It's cold air. You will discover that you can get the barrel quite cool near the breach with the muzzle still hot but I don't push it. I fire 2 to 4 rounds, then cool, then wait a minute or two for the temperatures to average out a bit, then back to shooting. It beats the heck out of sitting in the pickup with the AC blowing on the barrel on a hot day.

This is not a bad idea at all. Several of the ranges I used in Germany (specifically MSZU in Ulm) used them. There were hoses by the rifle rack, after a relay you would place the rifle in the rack and add the hose. The compressor was always on, so it was a good way to keep the rifles cool as the day went on.

Did not use the ice in the cooler though. Just moving air. Works to keep Porsches cool, so why not?

I use a similar setup with just an small air pump and plastic tubing for about 30 secs with tubing placed into the cartridge chamber and when the air isn't hot anymore I turn it off and wait another min or so and commence firing again.
