Allure of the Ruger No1

Looks great
Thanks, I hogged off a lot of excess wood, this is my brush gun, now it points like a shotgun.

I just sent my .22 hornet No 1 off to RJ Renner to have him make it the perfect match to the.275 stalking rifle he did for me.

He is a super nice guy. He does, as you said, sell the MorVue sight separately. Spoke to him on the phone and purchased the sight. Haven't had a chance to mount it yet.

I copied this summary from another site while trying to understand the different Ruger No. 1 models; it was concise and somewhat helpful (and hopefully accurate since I don’t see my Alex Henry forend 7x57 mentioned in any of these categories):

1-A: This is the model called the Light Sporter. It has a 22" barrel with iron sights and an Alex Henry forend (Yes! That's the one with the groove in it...) Weight: about 7 1/4 lbs.

1-AB: This is also a Light Sporter , but has NO iron sights and a semi-beavertail forend. (Kind of a cross between the 1-A and the 1-B) These were made from 1981-'83 and disfontinued when the #1-RSI was introduced...

1-B: This model is called the Standard Sporter. It has a 26" clean barrel (No sights) Wieght: about 8 lbs.

1-S: This model is called the Medium Sporter . It has a 26" barrel with sights and Alex Henry fore-end. Chamberings Were : 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, and .45-70 Gov't... .45-70 has 22" barrel. (Recently the .338 RCM and some pistol chamberings were added with 22" barrels...)

1-RSI: This model is called the International model. It has a 20" barrel with full stock and sights. (.243 Win, 7x57, .270 Win, and .30-06)

1-H: This is Tropical rifle. It has a 24" Heavy bbl with sights. Calibers: .375 H&H and .405 Win. in a fairly heavy barrel. (Weight: Just over 9 lbs.) and .416 Rem, .416 Rigby, .404 Jeffery, .458 Win Mag, .400/.450 Nitro Exp., and .450 NE. w/ Very Heavy barrel (About 10 lbs.) (Also has Alex Henry for-end)

1-V: This is the Varmint Model. This has 24" heavy barrel with beavertail fore-end in .223, .22/250 .243, 6mm Rem, and .25-06. 26" heavy barrel in .220 Swift. (Back in the '70's, a few 1-V's were produced in .280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, and .300 Win Mag... ) Ruger catalog lists the weight as 9 lbs, but I believe they are heavier than that. More like: "God-Awful-Heavy"...

Thanks, this is great information

Lipseys has made several “custom” runs over the years. These had varying barrel lengths, contours, forearms and materials. Makes for great hunting!

They are great as an A or rsi for a stalking rifle. The b’s, v’s and s’s for general purpose are fun. The v in a magnum(300wm) while heavy still exhibits an impressive recoil. My h(375) is a shove compared to the smack of the 300. I don’t think the 338s is as bad as the 300v. Wonderful rifles. Still want an AB in a 7-08. Looked but didn’t pull trigger at DSC 3 years ago. Went back to buy and it was gone! Guess it was a Lipseys or an employee gun. Black pad. Only one I’ve ever seen.

The real question is: What is the purpose of the groove in the forend?

I have a theory, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
