An 18-year-old Pennsylvania girl was mauled by a bear Friday while hunting with her dad. The real story is the letter she received from PETA following the attack in which she suffered bite wounds and almost lost an ear.

Via The Blaze: The letter, which asked the girl to use the attack to rethink her position on hunting, was written by Alicia Woempner, special projects division manager at PETA, to Camille Bomboy, 18.

I am writing on behalf of PETA and our more than 3 million members and supporters, including thousands across Pennsylvania, to send our best wishes for your speedy recovery and ask you to take a few moments to reflect on this incident.

This seems to be a good opportunity to put yourself in the place of the individuals you and the rest of your hunting party were trying to kill. As terrifying as it must have been to be attacked by a bear, please consider the frightening and painful experiences that hunters set out to impose upon animals.

[It] would be a blessing if you were to abandon hunting and decide to live and let live. [M]any animals endure prolonged, painful deaths when they"re injured by hunters.

Now that you've experienced the horror of an attacké lthough this one was in self-defense hope you will choose to enjoy nature in only nonviolent ways. Thank you for your consideration.

Where does one begin? Thankfully, for 18-year-old Camille, she was not out in the woods enjoying nature in a nonviolent way (presumably meaning, unarmed) when she was attacked by the bear in a very violent way.

Moreover, Camille can count her blessings to use the term in the letter that she was not accompanied by an equally-unarmed member of PETA who would have surely tried to reason with the bear before it killed them both.

Incidentally, Camille's dad used his rifle to scare off the bear.

Quote from Alicia Woempner's Twitter page "I work at PETA saving animals from the flesh-eating zombies."

One can not reason with ideology or stupidity, too bad, I like my kudu right next to the peas and carrots.

This particular quote does it for me....

"[It] would be a blessing if you were to abandon hunting and decide to live and let live. Many animals endure prolonged, painful deaths when they are injured by hunters."

Sigh.

To be honest I really liked the zebra. And this is coming from a semi-veg (fish only). Only ate the meat from the animals that I or my son harvested on our trip. In retrospect, kudu vs zebra, the zebra was friggin way better. Granted the kudu was old but the zebra was spectacular. Not as good as the eland liver however. Just saying..

zebra was one of the animals that l wanted to eat, while in Africa .
the outfitter said it wasn't going to happen as l would of been on the dunny for the next 2 days .
you just keep eating lots of fish janey ,mate .
you may be helping fund another African adventure ...

I'm telling you the zebra was very tasty. Very lean, tender and it had a sweetness that I couldn't describe. I'd have to compare the taste to lamb even though it was totally different but just as if not better. It was friggin delicious. Just the right balance of gaminess and high-quality lean meat. I was ashamed to ask for more at the time.
HOWEVER, that being said,
I prefer fish and soy over any protein for sure. I had to eat some of our quarry out of respect and I am glad I did. The taste of the zebra was spectacular.

I just saw a documentary on the travel channel regarding Australia and the fishing trade. Great story, I loved it!! It was about the sushi market..

some of my crew have done the tuna longlining ,
unreal how one fish may sell for 35,000 $
a lot of it done in cages now .
nothing on this planet tastes like wild caught tuna still flapping when they hit the frying pan .........

Screw the frying pan, just eat them as soon as you catch them.. Bring some lime enjoy!! A nice blue-fin can bring in over 100k!! The best cut is the belly, it's called toro and one has to eat it in a certain way. :Damn, if I were on your ship I'd probably be thrown overboard cause I'd keep eating everything.

Especially the sea-urchins. That's a money-maker mate.. Trust me on that. Do you have lion fish there? The blue-fin are very scarce now, getting a bit controversial. I have spent over 20 USD on less than an ounce of toro.
The sensation of a good piece of toro is indescribable. Better than a good piece of A%S!! ;););)

ive heard these myths of all these 100,000 dollar fish , janey .but only heard of it .
I know some very capable , longliners ,that have caught some worldclass fish and havnt cracked a ton ,for one fish yet .
75,000 is the best ive heard of .

Trust me, there are blue-fin that go to auction for 100k. I will look into it for you and see if I can send you some more info and a link to the program I just saw. . I just watched the documentary two nights ago. Some of these guys in Japan have been in business for over well over 50 years. I'm telling you the blue-fin will be endangered very soon, more than the snapper. If you ever have a chance watch Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. He is creating a huge impact for sustainable (alternative) seafood. He's really into conservation but supports sustainable harvesting of all animals. He was just in Namibia this past year and it was a great episode. I love this guy..

been asking the wogs down at the market about the urchins ,jane .
seems your on a winner ther mate .
havnt sent you any pictures yet .
been to busy the last 12 or so days ,contract complete this morning .....
got about 12 on the deck ,and another 8 or so in the bag at the moment .then its home tonight , clean this poor boat up tomorrow .she needs some loving ,l tell ya .
tweak the nets , then its time to put in some bush miles for a couple of days .
then dodging tiger snakes for 2 days, trout fishing with 3 of my loco mates .

20 bucks for and ounce of meat ????
theres plenty of southern blue finn left jane ....
the only reason the quota got cut down, here is because the amateur fisherman are catching more and more of them each autumn .

Just hook-up with some of your local sushi restaurants Bluey,. ask them about the blue-fin too. One can easily snorkel and harvest a shit-load of urchins as long as they aren't over fished. Gotta make sure they are harvested smartly.. I would put money on that adventure mate.. Just saying. Thinking you could corner a market

Yes!! Tuna belly (Toro) is a delicacy and very rare. I paid 10 USD for one little slice the other day, just to feel it on my tounge. It's pure heaven and creates a day-long experience.

RAW fish? YUCK! I've seen too many ocean fish with worms in the flesh to try it :)
Now, zebra is my all time favorite- by far!

Trust me Cliffy, there are plenty of worms/ovum in the zebra flesh. Those little bastards/parasites' life cycle is geared towards a mammal whereas fish parasites have evolved to thrive and function in birds and aquatic species. Those little buggers that have a mammal as a host are more likely to infect a human and cause wreak havoc way (like pigs or cows) before a saltwater fish will. Just saying..

ive met some of the auctioneers from japan , they know there stuff ,with out a doubt .one old bloke we talked to . his interpretater told us that oldmate could tell you where the fish was caught ,just by tasting it.
my understanding of sushi market is the more oily the fish is the better it sells .cold water fish are the oiliest .
mate the snapper are not ,and will not be endangered in our childrens life time at the current rate of capture , the tuna I cant vouch for .but the schools we see each summer end, are huge and in my opinion seem to be growin in number each year .
in Australia any quota specie is subject to amateur catch .if the amateur are targeting commercial species its our quota that gets dropped ,they may get a bagg limit .which they can illegally make a good living off of.
with blue finn tuna .2 fish for each person in the boat that hold an amateur fishing licence .tuna being seasonal for 7 weeks a year you can catch you bag limit easily
snapper 10 fish " "snapper if you on the ball and chase the fish ,you can do this 7 months of the year
most of them aren't rorting the system , but plenty do .
and as soon as these highly migratory specie move on they are endangered specie .in most amatuers opinion .and of course we are to blame .
when in fact in some week end fishing competitions more tuna are harvested than the quota for the whole fleet .
