I am unsure on how to adjust the rear sights on my Safari Express. Which screw is for elevation and which is for windage (drift adjustable). It is the NECG "Winchester" Adjustable Rear Sight (see attached picture). I think the screws, marked with number 3, are for elevation? I am guessing screw 1 loosens the hold so you can adjust windage and screw 2 loosens for elevation as well.
I don't want to mess with it prior to going to the range, but need to know in case I have to adjust it at the range. I have not used iron sights like this...

Number 1 loosens the sight in the dovetail so that you can move the sight for windage. Loosen number 3 screws (lock screws) and use number 2 to move sight for elevation. Lock down numbers 1 & 3 after adjusting.

Thank you! I was in the ball park, but just wanted to be sure.

#1 is for windage, however if screw 2 is screwed down tight (it protrudes through the bottom of sight base) it can make it hard to move left and right. For elevation loosen both #3 screws and adjust up and down with screw #2. NECG makes several different rear sight blades. Once you get the elevation adjusted you can remove it and measure the height from base to bottom of sight notch and that will give you the height you need for a replacement blade if you want to change.

Does the elevation screw go clockwise or counter clockwise for up?
I thought about getting a fiber optic front sight from NECG because the white bead is hard to see in certain lights and against certain backgrounds.

99% sure up is clockwise.

Got to the range and the first couple shots were very low. Good thing I asked about adjustment! Elevation was clockwise up after all. Finally got about there with the last 3 shots at 50 yards. Hornady DGS. Recoil was pleasant on the bench.

I have the same M70 and sights, so I read the above entries and figured I’d try to adjust mine. Adjusting irons shouldn’t be too difficult, shouldn’t be… And then I broke the end of my screwdriver and remembered that my dad told me years ago, never buy cheap tools!
Luckily, only the tip simply twisted off and I was able to turn the rifle upside down and the chip of the Chinese metal-like substance fell out; and after all that, the M70 sight was unfazed. I decided it was a sign from the cosmos to buy some quality, steel tools!
I’m just lucky my 458 didn’t wind up with a souvenir scar; it’s one thing if a rifle gets dinged and scuffed when you’re in the field, but your guns shouldn’t get marked due to careless and preventable accidents!

Had an excellent classifieds transaction with JoninCO. A truly honest and standup member. I wouldn't hesitate at all to deal with him again. Thanks, J!

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
