Yeah I’ve been looking for updates from time to time and haven’t seen anything new of recent. I hope things change!

If an disease is , as suspected , behind this decline in the population of caribou , there is little hope that you can hunt before decades.

I hunted caribou several times in the NWT almost 35 years ago and remember that the caribou population in Quebec was very great. You didn't have back then to go very far to start hunting.

I haven’t heard the disease theory, from my understanding it was due to overgrazing.

Overgrazing can only be the reason in some regions.

I don't know the local conditions , but in my opinion you have to make a difference between the population above the tree line and that of the forest. In the forest , wolves , and now also black bears , are sometimes held responsible for the decline in the population. As far as the forest is concerned , however , the wood industry and the money associated with it also seem to be a factor that can influence the caribou hunting , but this time in a positive way.

For those who understand french , and about woodland caribou :

The population jumped up 16% in one year after the close of all hunting.
They were waiting to see what mortality would be.
Also, they (PQ) were concerned about the sex ratios. Not enough males in the one herd apparently.

Older research.

I would suggest tracking the authors later research to determine if there are any actual updates available.

The numbers of caribou in all of Canada and most of the rest of the polar region are in serious decline. Don't expect good news.
