Hey gang,
I'd very much like to start a project gun with a Mauser 98 action. Apparently, so would a few other folks. Haha. Where, besides old sporterized builds, would a guy go about finding a good specimen? Or is that the way to go? Asking the experts.
Thanks in advance!

Cheapest/easiest way is to pick up an old interarms rifle. These can be found in good shape for under $500 if you look. Modern steel, longer hinged floorplate, etc... you can sell the barrel and stock to cover some of the costs.

Yea but some of interarms are nice rifles in there own right

Husqvarnas at Simpsons Ltd.
Clunkers in the pawn shops if you are lucky

I've gotten 2 Huskey's from Simpsons that I'm very happy with. 6.5x55 and 9.3x62 both on Swedish 96 actions.

Also, besides the.K98, what models are preferable? Most likely a .30 cal to .366 build, but I change my mind every hour.

You really need to decide if you want to go with a standard case rim or magnum. Better if you get the correct bolt face to start with, plus it will also affect the magazine and feed. Although if you buy a standard bolt face you can machine and modify them to magnum but not vice versa.

A pre 64 model 70 Winchester action is quite available and can fit a lot of the most useful cartridges, 9.3, 375, 416rem, 404j, 458 Lott. Makes for a much more “compact” feeling rifle as well.

I built my 404 on a military Czech 98 Mauser clone and it turned out well. A 30-06 barreled action bought off an auction site. It already had the bolt handle modified for a scope. That was done poorly and almost required tossing the bolt. Took some work to true it up. A local machinist opened the bolt face and did a great job though he'd never done it before. Had a gunsmith install the barrel and I did the rest. If I remember correctly I paid about $350 Canadian for the action. I see donor 98 Mauser rifles coming up on the auction sites from $400 to $600. Perhaps some vendors might deal for less. Finding a new commercially made barreled action for that price would be tough. When considering military actions, you should do your homework first. Some variations were not so good. The Czech vz.24 is one of the best.

There are a couple things to consider.
Among them, wil it be scoped or open sights only? If scoped, the Husqvarna (FN action) ‘98s are plentiful and the drilled and tapped examples go for less than the undrilled ones.
Of course, an undrilled one with otherwise rough condition can be had for very little outlay as well.

On the military side, an ‘09 Argentine is hard to beat as the bottom metal is pretty close to a commercial style - hinged plate, trigger bow release - actually they are quite nice.

The VZ.24 is the primo with FN a close second for sure!

While not a "Mauser" by name M -17(s) and P 14(s) make very solid working rifles. BRNO VZ -24(s) and ZG 47(s) are also very good actions.

I've got a Santa Barbara Mauser 98 in the white with a .473 bolt face if you're interested. Should be perfect for anything based on the 30-06.

I have this Argentine model that was put back years ago. Would she be a strong (pun intended) candidate for a transplant?

I didn't see your request re: ship co’s. My last shipment was 2023. Quotes from SBS Logistics ($1,198), Badger Cargo ($1,184 - used them) & AHG Trophy Shippers ($1,746). AHG owner's an asshole so wouldn't have used him anyway. Eastern Cape - Houston, TX, so your mileage may vary. NEVER use Karl Human Taxidermy aka Wild Africa Taxidermy on Eastern Cape. Trophies arrived shattered with no padding/packing material.
