Finished book 5, The Sky Came Tumbling Down, of Ron Thomson his memoirs, another great book, sad how Rhodesia went down and the murderous Mugabe and co took over.

Before that read My Confessions: Recollections of a Rogue by Samuel Chamberlain. Those were different times. If you like war memoirs and specifically the US- Mexican wars this is a must read.

For light reading, a re-print of Harold Lamb's historically accurate collected short stories and novellas, Swords from the Desert. For more serious reading, I am slowly finishing up Tom Holland's magisterial Dominion.

I enjoyed all of Mr. Thomson's memoirs to a certain degree (own all almost all his books), but found the six=part editions filled with repeated stories, poor formatting and editing, etc, and overall, a bit too much of a bombastic tone.

20% into this book by mr Sharp. Was a bit skeptic based on the cover but is actually an interesting read, humble and funny.

I'll have to disagree on the format, editing and repeated stories. In the Kindle version he doesn't repeat the stories and is referring only to the stories as a reference and then refers to the book he did mention them in for further reading.

Just finishing One Ranger Returns, it's the followup to One Ranger by Joaquin Jackson, Texas Ranger. Both great reads imo. Available on Kindle.

I actually have the hardback edition, not the digital variation. Perhaps books receive digital editing prior to uploading online. IIRC, my copies are first runs, which may explain the errors inherent. A thorough editing job by a professional would have eliminated the mistakes the lay reader (me) caught easily, and which distracted from the overall tone.

Mr. Thomson certainly lived in a fascinating span of time in the southern African story and I do appreciate his record for posterity.

I felt Mr. Sharps' account was mostly a collection of stories of his life, kind of like sitting around a campfire with a cigar and a glass of whiskey with the man.

I listened as well. I have the paper copy but just couldn't read it. The audiobook, with how it was narrated, was phenomenal. One of my most enjoyable "reads."

Off topic but currently listening to: "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" by Mark Manson.

I have to say. I am only 2 chapters in, and it might be one of the most personally-influential books I've ever/read listened to. It addresses how to handle a lot of problems in today's society. I don't say that tongue-in-cheek either, it's more than what the title lets on.

I've been catching up on lots of reading lately: Between the Elephant's Eyes, Killers in Africa, A Thousand Trails Through Africa, and The Zulu War have all been read. Currently reading Denatured Africa. Something of Value is on deck again. A Man Called Lion just arrived yesterday. Lastly, waiting for A Hunter's Wanderings in Africa to arrive. Retirement is a good thing.

Reading "Treasure Island" to my twelve year-old grandson before bed in the motel at his provincial bowling tournament. Lots of fun. And the illustrations by N.C. Wyeth are fantastic. That guy could really capture the action.

:3 of organizing. Then it dawned on me the overwhelming task of opening boxes and re-organizing.

From the family library of safari / hunting books I just read "Lion Hunting in Somaliland" by Captain C.J. Melliss and "Hunter" by J.A. Hunter. I also started just last week "Elephant Hunting in East Equatorial Africa" by Arthur H. Nueman. This last one has a pretty cool full size map in it as well. Cheers
