Same deal with this pintail, hen with muted drake plumage , banded in Nevada.

If I remeber correctly it was a drake that wasn’t producing testosterone-there was lots of discussion about chromosomes and dna and hormones. They were not specifically talking about this occurrence but plumage and sex in general I believe

I used to take my old Chessies, Brandt and Tug, everywhere I went. Waterfowl hunting is not the same without a good dog!

That lab “Bear” does have a great build-love that big solid head and intelligent eyes. Somehow I managed to miss all the good pix of my dogs this year. This is one of my favorites of my chessie “judge” with a greater aquatic woodpecker-

One of the kids with us needed one for one of the “slams” he is working on-it was a very beautiful and fully prime drake-I confess some jealousy!

Had a good friend fly from Ms to here in Canada for some good ones too. Was his second to last for NA slam. We get neat ones with pink colouring from salmon they eat

I love to go, but opportunities have been a bit dry lately. We had a wonderful place not far from the house that just got destroyed by local people trashing it, poaching it and the land 'manager' letting anyone on the place for a six pack when we had paid hunting rights from the owner.
So for now its whenever we can get an outfitter to hunt local or head up to the panhandle for geese and sandhills.

Not sure how many red breasted mergansers I had to sort through to get a good one for the wall! I’m confident it was in the dozens, would kill what I thought was a good one but they would always have some little imperfection.
It was good work for the dog in tough tidal conditions and they were okay in gumbo.
Luckily I only had to shoot 2 commons to get a good one.
