Warning on new Leupold scopes

I like the idea.

These batteries are deadly to children. If this saves one child's life I'm fine with the compromise it imposes.

One might not have children around but who knows where the scope might end up 10 or 20 years from now...

My VX-5 has cross hairs regardless of if red dot is on/off.

If one doesn't subscribe...sell it...knowing Leupold is doing their part to protect our kids and their kids...

Leupold quality has been a downward spiral for years. The last straw for me was when they discontinued the last fixed-6x scope, after they already discontinued their other fixed power center fire scopes. I’ve heard way too many legitimate complaints about failures in their high end scopes. The S&W analogy is valid; another once-great American company that can no longer seem to figure out how to do the one thing they built their reputation on.

Kids are not swallowing batteries....but infants learning to crawl and crawling are.

This is not about guns. This is not about optics. The big picture is about protecting infants from batteries.

Leupold is trying to do their part. I commend them and will live with the inconvenience.

Hell with that I survived in a household that was full of guns, ammo, chain saws, circular saws, knives, lead paint, and other such things. Watch your children and teach them how to be safe around guns ammo and sharp things. Government should not be involved in things they do not under stand. Show me something our goverment gets right. Government is no replacement for parenting.

When we moved into my grandfather’s house, at 13 years old, my Dad, and grandfather kept watch over me, with the kerosene hurricane lamps, the gas burner stoves for scalding the chickens we butchered with machetes, batteries, toxic pesticides, diesel, tractors and implements, the simple pine wood gun cabinets that I always had adult supervision and the MEC shotshell reloaders.

When we opened the gun cabinet, it was for late fall hunting for quail, rabbits or a few ducks in late winter. Occasionally a varmit canine trying to get a new born calf.

These men always made sure I was safe using tools and materials safely.
I can’t imagine having to manage infants and toddlers not getting into batteries in sporting gear. My gun safe still has space for security.

See the pictures. The battery cap sits inside of a cup so you can’t spin it off with your fingers. And sure you could take a couple of screwdrivers and spin it around if you absolutely had to, at the risk of scarring an extremely expensive scope

It comes with a plastic gadget that has five spokes that fit into the shallow indentations on top of the cap. This is something else that I’m now gonna have to carry around plus a spare if leupold does not have a better solution.

If they would’ve just used a coin slot, it would’ve been almost as secure from a 3 to 4-year-old child and it would be much more user-friendly to a 66 year-old adult in the middle of the plains

And I like the dot in the scope. Scopes with red dots are on pretty much every rifle in the five gun Safes I own.

I do change the battery before I ever go hunting. Batteries are cheap. It doesn’t mean it’s not gonna fail on the second or third day. I always carry spare batteries.

And if you’re worried about Batteries killing children, by that logic, there should be no automobiles because those are killing far more small children

And of course you’re not seeing anything on the web about it. The scopes came out just in the last couple of months is my understanding and Leopold is not advertising that they have something that’s gonna stop people from buying their scopes - there’s no mention of this on the Leopold website at all

Are you in favor of lithium batteries being sold in factory original containers that require the consumer to use a special tool to open them ?

Same for motor oil ?

How about particularly spicy hot sauce, should a special tool be required to open “Dave’s Insanity” brand Habanero Sauce ?

That cap is pure supidity. Why not make a coin slot. I'm pretty sure infants are not carrying change with them. I was just thinking about buying a vx6 1 to 6. I think I will have to find a different brand.

The cap is not the problem, having to carry another piece of equipment plus a spare is the issue

If they would’ve just used a coin slot or not done this at all, there wouldn’t be any complaints

I don't remember where but I recently heard something about new regulations requiring this kind of measure on equipment with batteries. I fear it may be more widespread, and we're just seeing Leupold on the bleeding edge of it.

Well I'll be damned! I just got a new shipment last week. So after the pics I went and took a VX5HD out of the box and there it was. So must be pretty new thing. Fortunately in Canada we have two coins. One is a $1.00 coin called a looney because of the Loon stamped on it and the other is $2.00 coin called a tooney because it's worth twice as much as the looney. Pulled one out of my pocket and lo and behold it's wide enough to remove the cap. Not Leupolds best idea!

Just get another tool. Or sell the Leopold's and get some Nightforce.

I really don't see this as a major issue. If Leopold has gone this way for a legal reason then the rest of the manufactures are not far behind.

It’s the idiot parents who sue for easy money…the world isn’t perfect, so sue & make the mindful folks pay. My hearing aid batteries take a knife and or a screwdriver to access, perhaps another lawsuit pending when one hurts themselves trying to get a fresh battery. Can’t fix stupid, but we can pay for it.

The CR2032 battery is in virtually every automobile remote key fob. Somehow the automobile manufacturers don't seem overly concerned, there must be something behind this regarding Leupold's actions.

Have you ever tried to get the damn battery out of a fob?!

Looks like it is a Biden regulation from 2023 kicking in.

Consistent with Reese’s Law, ANSI/UL 4200A-2023 requires either the use of a tool such as a screwdriver or coin to open the battery compartment, or the application of at least two independent and simultaneous movements to open by hand; additionally, such consumer products must pass a series of performance tests simulating reasonably foreseeable use or misuse. The standard also includes labeling requirements for consumer products containing button cell or coin batteries, and labeling requirements for consumer product packaging.
