I just wanted to share my experience with my friends on AH. I see so many people like me who started hunting with small bores for PG then got into DG hunting moving to big bores. I just want to share what I have learned for your consideration.
I took a shooting lesson from a former Navy Seal in Dallas Texas. I have hunted since I was 8 really with no coaching at all. I wanted to learn from the experts to better my ability. Here is what I learned from this man:
Seals are taught to completely empty their lungs of air; they then have about 6 seconds to shoot. This is when their heart beats are at their lowest thus they are at their most steady all else being equal. They are taught to squeeze the trigger and “call the shot” meaning they do not let the gun rise they “try” to see the bullet impact.
Marines on the other hand are taught to not squeeze the trigger but know exactly when the shot breaks. They too “call the shot”. They are taught to let out half a breath before firing.
Now, let’s take the above to big bore rifles I will define as 470 NE and above. I have found the Seal way works for me with my DR in 500 NE but I pay a price…I can shoot 10 rounds per session but no more given recoil. @Tanks i believe has conquered this in that when you watch his video he lets his big bore ride up after the shot meaning he “rolls with the recoil” versus trying to maintain sight focus “calling the shot.” If you look at his 80 yard targets with his method I wish I was as good as he is…I am still working on it.
My point here is I pay a price in recoil by keeping the same technique I learned with small bores as I move into large bores. I have found I still need to “ call my shot” not rolling with the recoil to maintain my confidence. @Tanks please forgive me if I have mischaracterized what I have learned from you
hope this helps people who move from small bore to big bore shooting
