Taking firearm to Canada

*the don't bring an undeclared, loaded pistol across the border comment (that's just a No-brainer that applies to both The People's Republics of NY/NJ and probably CA/OR/WA off the top of my head!) LOL WTF would do that in another Country? Darwin would shake his head and smile....

You must wait 90 sec before performing this action (so I thought i'd type more on the darknet)

Must wait 12 sec...the wood fire city street ovens are just warming!

I've lived my hole life able to see Canada across the lake out my back door. In the summer almost every time on the boat we would go to Canada fishing, swimming or just to have dinner at a restaurant. I spent $1000's of dollars a year in Canada, carried Canadian money in my pocket next to American money. Today I stay on the Michigan side of the Lake and frequent Michigan establishments. I know many other Americans that do the same thing. Also quit my twice a year hunting and fishing trips to Canada. Got tired of them taking every thing out of my truck and boat at Customs every time crossing. Never had US Customs give be any problem ever at the same crossing.

Saskatchewan is not a problem...have done that several times and will again next month for spring bear camp. The problem, if you have one, will be in Toronto. I've heard the Canadian guides tell many people to avoid Toronto if at all possible. They might lose bags for a day or two. They are not very friendly to hunters coming in. Regardless of what someone has done coming back to States, you need a 4457 for that serial number. It's possible they won't ask for it but you are required to have one and I wouldn't risk anything by not having it. Any international travel with guns should be done with a 4457. Any advice to ignore that should be disregarded. We have covered this so many times on this forum. You do not need a "fixer" for entering Canada with shotgun or rifle but NO handguns. Simple as that.

Here is a partial list of the newly prohibited firearms that includes hunting guns and shotguns.
This partial list values are note and considerably higher than what has been paid in the Buy Back program. Now, we do know that Weatherby .460 magnum is a prohibited caliber. We also know that all of these Weatherbys were not ever chambered in .460 mag. The .378 does not produce over 10,000 Joules of energy, thus are they saying at some time. ALL of these Weatherby's were re-chambered or barreled to .460 when the long gun registry was on. Ruger #1's are also in the list, somewhere. According to the government, all of these are scary military designed, Assault rifles.
The 1908 Argentine Mauser is also in the list.

Parker Brothers DH 12 bore SxS

here are the 26 pages of the list.
https://www.canada.ca/en/public-safety-c...w_wcB#wb-auto-4

We (mostly) all know that shotguns larger than 10 bore, ie" 9 or 8 and larger, are all now considered to be prohibited firearms, due to being larger than .798"(20mm) in bore size. This does not explain the Parker Brothers GHE which was made in 12 and 20 bore.
The 10,000 joules also excludes ctgs. such as the .50 Browning ctg. and some other wildcats, such as the .505 Barnes Supreme.

EVERY year, someone tries to cross the border into Canada from the USA with a revolver or pistol.
There is a TV show about it. This is not a HOLLYWOOD production, but filmed at our border crossings.
Called CBSA, or CBCA or something like that.

I’d try to route through an airport in AB or SK and avoid Toronto and eastern provinces with guns if possible. Your travel agent can give the latest details on ideal routes and rules/regs, but in years past it has been a very easy experience for me through Calgary and Edmonton.

3 hours minimum between flights in Toronto when bringing a rifle.

Following @Green Chile ‘s point on 4473s, I’ve been asked by both CA and USA customs agents if I was bringing a certain rifle in or out that I had traveled with before. “No 300 Win on this trip?” “Bringing back in the 338?” Etc.

It would be absolute idiocy to not follow the law here or there on the paperwork required to legally take a rifle in or out of country.

These opinions are my own and are not to be constituted as legal advice.

Ok, I'm now a little intimidated....
Heading to Quebec in May for bear, and I was not concerned, until, looking at the list of 26 pages of prohibited firearms.
My plan was to bring a combination 16g/8x57R. It's quite old and has no recognizable manufactorer name or model anywhere. It has the usual "Suhl" and "Laufstahl", but no easily understood names.
We'll be driving and crossing at the Jackman ME border station.
The crossing itself, and the border guys are straightforward , my concern is that the firearm is not easily "pigeonholed" into a know and comfortable category.
Any thoughts?

I would not be concerned about that firearm, Denvir Tire. It is obviously a hunting rifle, but then I'd have thought the same of a Weatherby or bloody Westley Richards SxS 12 bore, I think it was.
Make sure your paper work is correct. As well, check the Canadian Firearms Branch web site for bringing firearms into this country. I've never heard of the 4473 or other forms, but then I've never lived outside this "changing" country.

I just looked up the Weatherby Mark V Europa and it is available in calibers:
6.5x68, 7x64 Brenneke, 8x68S, and 9.3x64. This makes ZERO sense.

I'm assuming it is or was available in .460 WTBY, or some wildcat of equal power, over 10,000 Joules muzzle energy.
If not listed as call the firearms center, then any police officer would assume it's prohibited. They might, anyway. All this is up in air, as many police across Canada have been told not to enforce any of this BS. On the other hand, there are some who will enforce it, both border security and local police. There is actually no way of knowing without contacting your outfitter in Canada to see what they say - or best to contact the Canadian Firearms Centre (Google for E-mail address) & see what they say about the rifle or shotguns you are bringing up. Then copy and photograph or print off that e-mail to show at the border if challenged.

Toronto is a busy airport and I prefer to avoid it at all costs. Sadly, you likely won't be able to.
Delays can certainly happen there and do.
As noted already, leave yourself some time. How much, depends on the day.

The firearms side is simple. Fill in a form and pay your money.

Enjoy your hunt and good luck.
Thanks for the info. I’ll be hunting Canada for the first time for Dall Sheep in 2028. At one time I was seriously considering one of the MDT folding stocks but looks like that would be a prohibited firearm. Glad I took the time to read through this!

Are you headed for B.C. or Alberta?
The reason I ask, is that Alberta should be easier than B.C.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?

You might have edited your post on the PH in the Bubye. I know the PH and is a wonderful person and a fmaily man and runs a succesful business in Zim and just doesn't want the attention that the internet offers, the ugly kind.
