No, am going to cut a thin piece of laminated glass the same form as the wood and cover the wood with it, will ensure easier cleaning process after work has been done on the block..like cutting vegetables and meat..

Gert, have you ever seen an old fashioned stump puller? It is made from a large branch with part of the trunk attached. You attach the puller to the stump with a chain, the pulling power is provided by draft animals, either a horse, mule or ox. From the way you describe your black powder camp, all of the necessary "tools" are already onsite.

Hallo all Members, being a long time since I updated this thread...Members, I will get more time building the 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser...it will be completed early next year and I will upload photos of the build...meanwhile I add to this great process by getting a great looking original M38 Swedish Mauser for free from a friend...I am now the owner of one custom 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser as well as an original Mauser ....will upload photos of the new Swedish Mauser ....
Shootist, please give me some info in regards to the availability of after market rifle scope mount for the original Swedish Mauser without drill/tap procedures ?????

Girt I an unaware of any means by which a scope can be attached to a Swede without drilling and tapping.

there is a mount the fits in the rear sight base and uses a extended eye relief scope that needs no D&T. like a scout rifle.

Shootist, I know there is a procedure that you use the express sight to substitute the existing sight and use a after market pica-tinny rail system...but then you need to use a long eye relief scope....
Shootist, it is the dual mount system I am talking about...I will make a scope mount like that for the Swede....I am currently busy building a modern Swedish Mauser as well..it is good to have two of a great caliber rifles at my disposal...

Gert, be aware that the normal two piece rear bases for the Swedish Mauser are of different heights. To my knowledge the receiver will have to be drilled and tapped. Although most of my Swedes have the two separate bases, I do have one with a Redfield Jr. mount that is one piece. Is your M - 38 a converted Carl Gustav Stadts or a Husqvarna?

Gert, sorry, but I wouldn't have much confidence in the long term viability of that mount. Too much of a cantilevered effect. IMHO there is a reason why the two piece bases are most frequently used. You wanted to ring gongs or take animals at long distances with your Swede. This sight base isn't the best way to do that.

as shootist 43 says, plus look how high the scope is.

when you drill & tap the action, center your scope, and be prepared to shim one of the bases so that the elevation remains fairly centered.
sideways centering can be a hard one, but drilling your holes in the right place is a good start.

Gert, in a word YES. If you are concerned about getting it done correctly i.e. lack of machinery, knowledge or whatever, have your gunsmith buddy do it.

Shootist,Bruce, thank you kindly, good I will drill and tap to fit scope mounts, to me this rifle is not a collectors item, just a normal milsurp rifle ..but I really want to shoot it accurately...I will be have more time available to continue with the 6,5 x 55 Swedish Mauser I am currently building..spend a lot of time fitting /building a new vintage kitchen from the 1885 era ..old Cape Dutch kitchen where I can cook on an open fire in my kitchen...

Does anybody have any practical experience with the difference in rim/case head diameter between the 6.5x55 and others such as the 7x57? The difference isn't huge and I suspect that with the Mauser bolt face and extractor design there would not be problems but I am only guessing. Looking for input. I ran across a smoking deal ($10) on a beautiful light weight small ring 7x57 barrel and am thinking of looking for a swede action to mate it with.
