SOUTH AFRICA: First Plains Game Hunt In RSA

Congratulations on the hunt! Looks like an amazing trip!

Congrats on a great hunt, Mason, and some very nice trophies.

I would do the kudu in a euro mount, until you decide otherwise. I have also used Lifeform, and they are good, no doubt.

As for the hartebeest, they are really ugly, I shot mine on the last day of my second safari, but after a while I really took a liking to it :ROFLMAO:

I agree @Nyati on the Hartebeest. On the way back home we started to wonder if we should have caped it for a shoulder mount it but I much prefer the Euro look on those.

Have you started talking about your next safari yet?

Fantastic story, masonmc, and congrats to you and Lena for the experience and the trophies.

Glad you dwelt a bit on taxidermy, because in planning my own first safari that is the great unknown as far as cost. Can you give me an example (using the kudu you got, European mount) of all the actual costs associated between the time you finish your safari and the time you open the box in the USA? It's hard to find such comprehensive info.

Anyway, loved the report! Thanks for sharing.

Great write-up. Thanks for all the suggestions on shipping and taxidermy.

@Tom Leoni The following numbers will include all 7 trophies combined into one crate Lifeform: dry skins dip pack $1535 Crating and Packing $380 Permits and documentation $150
SCS: Airfreight, Fees Etc $854
D&L Brokerage: $431
So about $3350 to get it all home. I KNOW there are cheaper options out there for dip and pack but id happily pay again for the service and quality received. And they picked up from the concession where we left them.

So roughly $478 per trophy. Just to get it home.

@Shootist43 Im hoping to go on a buff hunt maybe in 2019. We will likely go back to RSA and spend a couple three days in Cape Town.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
