So I finally broke out the 7x57 M70 last night to get it prepared for it's first trip to the range. Got brass, bullets, powder, primer and dies. Time to give the barrel a clean up and mount a scope. Front base on. Rear base.......oh #$#^$#! Stripped the mother pheasant plucking threads on the front hole for the rear base!!!! Without a single shot fired, rifle is at the smith.

Don't know your own strength?

Ouch.

Not sure what happened here. Just knew it when suddenly the screw loosened. As luck would have it, my smith was telling me about having to re-tap scope mount holes in the past. Apparently an easy job......that is when I'm not the one doing the work I guess. First time for anything I guess. I've done this job so many times now and never had this happen.

Always been scared of doing it.
Too easy to over torque screws with my big mitts.

Damn Winchesters and their soft steel :heh::heh::heh:

My beloved R700 35 Whelen has an extra hole in the to (rear base as well) broke the head off of the screw, neither me nor the smith could get it out, so he drilled and tapped a new one.

You owe me a decal for that one!

Been there, done that. Get yourself one of these, Phil.

Got one already. I always have set those particular screws to 20 in-lbs per wherever I heard that. Apparently that's too tight. Prior to having that I had my preset cheapo torque wrench from Warne that I think is preset to 25in-lbs. So I don't know if I started the screw cockeyed or what. Perhaps 35 is right and the steel there in the threads is an issue.

It'll be just a short 2-3 weeks before I find out! :doh2:

Stuff happens, there is nothing wrong with Winchestor, could be a number of factors....screw was cockeyed, thread messed up....heck bad screw.

Indeed. Just been sitting on that rifle for awhile now waiting for summer to end. Then school and football began and there wasn't much time. Just frustrated now that I've got a little time to finally work in some shooting. Oh well, back to my Ruger No.1 for a while.

I would take the opportunity while he has it to, for a few extra bucks, have all the scope base holes upsized. It is never a bad idea and a common accurizing upgrade.

Not a bad idea at all!

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
