These were Boer issue during the war with Brits. This one is date stamped 1897. Okay, they had mostly dropped their wool red coats by then but the moniker stuck.
"Made specially for ZAR" means this rifle was issued to commando of the Transval province or Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek at the time of the Boer War.

A very enjoyable build if you can get all the internals together. I had one that needed a restock so that was a very rewarding project
