Show Us Your Hunting Knife

Here is a real old stager. This was originally a Frost/Eriksson (later Mora) Scout knife with a wooden handle.

I bought it new as a young lad in the 1970's and used it a tremendous amount for paunching rabbits.
I was big Into ferreting as a young'un.

For decades it was lounging around in a tool box looking a bit sad. I had been given a piece of Père David's Deer antler (which is as hard as Ivory) so gave it a new handle (the wooden one had fallen apart) and added a bit of Buffalo horn on the end.
A mate made the sheath. Sadly due to the years of sharpening the edge geometry is such that it struggles to keep an edge, but I use it now and again for old times sake.

It is nothing special to anyone but me, but then that is part of the pleasure of such things surely?

Last one for a while. Not a hunting knife but I will post none the less.
My Grandfather was a butcher (died 1948) This was one of his knives. Now cherished by me and in my posession. Still used for carving roasts. A great example of how a knife reduces through sharpening over decades of use. Still razor sharp (.410 case for scale)

Opinels are great, but the carbone one is the prize. The stainless inox one doesn't hold it's edge as well.
@Kevin Peacocke
The carbon steel Opinels hold a beautiful edge for a long time. As they are a thin blade I like to sharpen mine at 17 degrees. That slim blade and fine edge really make it razor sharp with effortless cutting. With that fine edge it needs to be put on the steel more often but man it slices with ease.

Just picked up another knife that my wife doesn't know about...yet. Benchmade Osborne 945, little brother to the 940. Nice and handy little bugger. I'll spend the evening putting a proper edge on it for use tomorrow.

Just got this knife & sheath back from having a custom sheath made.

My wife bought me the knife sometime ago on an Indian Reservation in the Southwestern United States. (Probably made in China but she was so excited to give it to me so it's special)!

So I had this wonderful sheath made for it. Very happy with the results.

Photos were taken by the fine young man (Nick) that made me this sheath.

Ive gotten into the habit of picking up a new hunting knife whenever I do an international hunt lately.. back in April I was in New Zealand, so I thought it would be cool to add a New Zealand hunting knife from Gary (board member) to the collection.. We just returned to the US from South Africa on Sunday.. on our way out of the country we stopped by Safari Outdoors in Pretoria and I picked up a really nice blade made by PS Roodt.. the scales are giraffe bone..

Im not a great fan of the sheath.. I'll probably make a replacement for it myself.. but the blade is exceptionally well executed.. there is a distal taper in the tang that took a good bit of craftsmanship to execute, and the fit and finish on the knife is extremely well done... I think it will be a medium to small game skinning and processing stud..

I also picked up a #7 Opinel folder when I was in Rustenberg checking out an Outdoors shop.. I figured for $15 I couldnt go wrong.. It will make a good glove box knife just to keep in the Ranger side by side for whenever a knife is needed..

Have already processed 2 doe with this blade… as suspected it’s a skinning machine… also hasn’t needed a touch up yet.. the edge is still razor sharp… super impressed so far…

I might be looking to pick up more work from PS Roodt..

Could this one find a permanent home in your suitcase?

To be truthful, I like it better than anything I’ve ever made for myself.. and it’s definitely in the top 3 of all of the various customs I’ve collected over the years…

Roodt is a maker I’d never heard of prior to just seeing his work in Safari Outdoors last month… but he’s definitely got some skills… little things like a steep distal taper in the tang, the seamless joint between the scales and the tang, etc are all executed flawlessly…

The size, blade profile, and blade width are about perfect for processing a whitetail as well (I’m guessing he had impala in mind when he was making the knife :) )..

@mdwest - I was in Safari Outdoors in Pretoria in August '25. I saw the knives and held a few of them. Of course I need another one like a hole in the head at this point, but when I go back...I'll be taking another look.

Cheers.

You were there just 1 month before I was… we were there in Sept..

We’re tentatively planning another buff hunt in July 2026 (wife has to break in her new double.. and I’m thinking another buff hunt for me would be fun as well)… assuming we do the hunt, I’ll definitely be swinging by Safari Outdoors again… I love that place (although my wallet hates it)…

Here's an unissued US MK2 utility knife made by Union (Ka-Bar) late '43 through '44. DOM based on construction features. The MK2s were fairly large with about a 7" blade. Note the grooved leather disc handle. The MK1s were a smaller version utility knife with simpler blade design and non-grooved leather disc handle. Both were made by various govt contractors like Camillus, Union (Ka-Bar), Pal, Ontario, etc.

IMO the MK2 design, utility and usefulness is hard to improve upon. That construction and handle design just works. The overall design of both the MK1 and MK2 utility knives have stood the test of time. I like the MK2's handle better but prefer the slightly smalerl size of the MK1.View attachment 424265

Now there's a knife!

When I told my little brother that I was going hunting in South Africa, he decided that I needed a special knife to go to. He had this teardrop Damascus beauty made by Lazarus Forge in East Tn. Very special. View attachment 720541
That is a gorgeous knife both blade and handle. Congratulations.
