Hello all, I came across an findings in guns internation web for a new Rigby rifle with 404 and 458 calbers with very intresting manufactering combination as the barrel and stock made in UK and with the mauser action made in Germany for $16000 by Bass pro shop. It appears prity good deal, any body has any information, experence good or bad with this product.

Plenty of discussion on here.

From personal experience, an excellent product, with a fine heritage.

The barrelled actions are made by Mauser, who share the same parent company ar Rigby.

Look forward to seeing pictures of your new acquisition.

;)

I have a Rigby Big Game PH in 404 Jeffery that I purchased from Cabelas in Buda on 9/10/2026 just like the one your thinks about. It’s a fantastic firearm Im very happy with the fit the Finnish on the other hand leaves something to be desired. I began carrying it on my afternoon walks around the ranch. Now being in South Texas in September it’s hot an every where I would get sweat on the rifle the Finnish started to come off. I’ve never had this happen before. An I will not send the rifle back. Im going to refinish it with my own oil mix when all the all the factory finnish come off. I hope this helps..

I never heard or see such a thing, that should not happen to a high end product. I have seen the blue on the barrel fade away after a long use due to contact. it should be covered under warranty . Get in touch with them see what they say. Keep us posted please and good luck.

Buy a bottle of this. A quick wipe on and a bit of a light buff with a rag and it’s like new again.

Had you applied sun block lotion before you went out? Or any other hand cream or such like?

Did you happen to have any products with DEET on your body or hands

Good catch and warning.....I have a Rigby client who was on a hunt in Africa in 2024 and used a form of DEET bug spray on his hands and face....large sections of the stock finish came of where his hands and face touched the wood and sections of the metal that was color cased became badly corroded as well. We refinished the stock and metal parts for him.

Good catch gents, if that’s what it was, Deet. Looks like it could be. Deet is absolutely horrible for sporting equipment, melting plastics, great way to destroy the coating on optics, binocular housing armor, rubber eye cups, just nasty shit. If I do use Deet it’s just around my ankles for ticks and chiggers then wash the hell out of my hands! Do not put it anywhere on your skin that combined with sweat will drip or rub onto any surfaces susceptible!

My Mauser floorplate was discolored while carrying it in Africa. I did not use Deet but I did use Permethrin. Not sure if that is related..

The main chemical in Deet melts plastic! Picaridin and Permethrin are safe for gear and are what I primarily use. Deet is very effective but one must be careful and use wisely.

Hmmm.. no Permethrin didn’t effect it, your Mauser Das Original I believe has the Plasma nitriding, so the steel is protected from corrosion because it’s fused into the molecules of the steel. You may have worn a bit of the black finish off from friction from carrying but it did not harm the metal and it’s a “badge of honor” anyways.

Thank you for that explanation...

That surprised me to read. My Rigby Big Game Rifle has several safaris under its belt now, and while I do try and give some attention to the case colored furniture, all the backed components have the plasma nitride finish and have proven incredibly durable. I did lose the red/white paint from the S and F on the bolt shroud I think from gun scrubber one cleaning.

Any real oil finish will have some thinning and reaction to repeated or prolonged contact with sweaty skin, be it hands or other parts of your arm. Wonderful thing is it’s also easily cleaned up with a super thin coat of BLO now and then. If you really wear or through some reaction remove the finish in an area, then a couple/few coats would prove useful.

Also, consider using a coat of Renaissance Wax now and then, at least before a hot sweltering safari or even hot ranch walks with sunscreen and bug dope. I always apply a coat before packing my rifle/s for a
Safari and no reason not to use it now and then if carrying your rifle often while hot and sweaty. Just adds a nice protective layer from the salts and acids of life with a sweaty owner.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
