Thought I would give this a try on my new M70 since there's not much info out there; what I did find was all positive. Also considered Murphy Precision Ti pic base with Leupold QRW rings and Ken Farrell pic base and rings. Those solutions were considerably more expensive and heavier. The Game Reaper was $96 delivered to my door and weighs 3.3 ounces (94g) including the screws. Also, I don't own any special scope mounting tools/jigs/alignment devices, so I intend to mount and use as the maker intended- nothing special required, so we'll see. This is what's included:
Of note are the extra long screws for the rings and the offset connecting rail to clear the loading area. HELP: I was concerned about 35-inlb on the rings. Leupold says to follow the manufacturers instructions but I wanted to see if anyone expert in Leupold scopes (@Mark Biggerstaff) could render an opinion. The inside of the rings are smooth, not machined. The screw heads are 7/64-inch hex. The rail is 0.320 inches wide (8.1mm). The mounting holes lined up perfectly with the holes in my receiver. Note the model number engraved into the rail: 70SAF3M = Model 70 Safari action 30mm main tube Medium height. The website has a digital catalog that includes every model they make by gun make and model with the measurements from receiver to bottom and center of the ring to help you order. I emailed to make sure about the height and to ask if this unit can stand up to heavy recoil. Tim, the owner, assured me that recoil was no problem and that medium was the only height available for my gun.
Here is the position of the bar relative to the loading area; it is less intrusive than most 1-pc bases in my opinion.
And the completed mount in profile with the Leupold VX-6HD 1-6x Patrol. Can't tell from the angle here, but any emergency DG loading would be hampered more by the windage knob more than the 1-pc rail in my opinion.
Not sure I'm at the final eye relief I want, but this is the relationship between the bolt and mag knobs at 6x. If I operate the bolt fast with the palm (as one should) it will clear, but I wouldn't count on it. No problem at 5x.
Here's a glamour shot outdoors in the early afternoon comparing the different shades of black.
And the final glamour shot.
Final weight as shown is 10lb 7.8oz (4.76kg). Loaded weight with 350gr. pills will be 10lb 14oz (4.93kg). Hopefully makes for a comfortable 416Rem. No shots fired yet; I'll have to report back how the base performs. Hope this helps anyone looking for an alternative mounting solution.
