Do you use or prefer QR/QD scope mounts?

  • I have them on all my rifles.

  • I have them on a few of my rifles.

  • I have them on rifles for a specific reason.

  • I've tried them but don't like them or had bad experiences.

  • I prefer regular non-removable scope mounts.

  • Scope mounts? I only use iron sights.

A few AH members have had some issues taking carryon scopes, I believe once on the African side of the pond, being considered part of the weapon by some African airport security folks. Maybe they can chime in. It’s been discussed before.

I use Warne and Talley quick detachable mounts/rings on all my big bores but I always leave them on the rifle, inside the Pelican 2 gun case for the above reason plus space is no issue and it’s well protected. I do take the bolt out and have a spot cut out inside the foam case for it.

Thank you. I have a similar set up with a custom foam cut out inside a Peli case for my “regular” deer rifle with fixed scope mounting so I’ll likely do the same and have a new cut out made for this rifle given the risk of issues / delays once in Africa. Appreciate the response.

My wife and I have taken our scopes in our carry on several times with no issues. It’s also where we keep our binos, although they are much less likely to be considered part of a firearm.

With the amount of money we have tied up in optics, I’m not about to trust anyone with them. If I were allowed, I’d keep the rifle with me too!

Take them off and put them in their own soft case (maxpedition) and put in with rifle in hard case. I travel without the foam in the hard case and travel with rifle in soft case inside. Along with my shooting sticks.

I’m considering doing this as well, but haven’t come up with a suitable arrangement that allows the modularity I’d like. Can you drop a picture of your setup?

Outdoor connection contains bolt, maxpedition case has optic, bob allen case has rifle. The hard case is a boyt single rifle hard case no wheels. It has steel latches and the best locks locations in imo of all of them. I leave the foam on top part of case. I have done 4 safaris like this with 0 problems. Don’t forget to put I tag somewhere where it can’t get knocked off

I have 20 rifles of which 13 are 375H&H up to 600NE . I have 7 scoped rifles all bar one ( a 7mm Mauser) have QD scopes and iron sights. The QDs range from Talleys to proprietary mounts from Purdey , H&H and Mannlicher. All my scopes are low magnification and I rarely if ever remove them - no need as I only ever use the minimum magnification 1.5x or 2.5x . Whenever I have removed the QDs I have never lost my hunting range zero of out to150 metres max. My preference is to still use iron sights whenever/ wherever I can .
I like your style!

Most of my guns have no scope at all. Of those that do two have fixed and two have QR. The two with fixed scopes are rarely used. Of the two that have QR, scopes are a last resort against the option of irons. So I am a big fan of the QR systems.

It was asked in another thread that a poll be started to see how many people are using or prefer QR/QD mounts.

Most of you know that I'm a fan of the Blaser R8 and using QD mounts with this system is extremely easy. As a result, all my rifles have optics with some sort of QD mount. Scopes, thermal, red dots and other items can all be taken off for any number of reasons.

I've yet to have a problem with a scope retuning to zero, and as such I don't hesitate to remove them regularly. Reasons for me are mostly for cleaning and keeping the chemicals away from the lenses on the scopes. The other major reason is travel and having the ability to keep the optics in my carry-on is an option if I so desire. Lastly is storage. When setting up a vault or safe, it's easier to get more rifles into a space without the optics attached, not to mention the possible damage from bumping or knocking one of the rifles over.

I recognize that not everyone wants or needs a QD mount or may only use them on select rifles for a specific reason. So here is the poll. Up to two votes and you have to vote to see the results.
If moving a scope with the QD mount to a different Blaser barrel, would this still keep zero?

All the Blaser barrels have the same mounting system. It would be like taking an optic with a Picatinny rail an putting it on another rifle that has a Picatinny rail. It wouldn't be zeroed for that particular rifle/cartridge setup.

That said, it should be extremely close for the left to right adjustment. Elevation is another story.

I'll take the Vortex scope cover you have listed in the Pay it Forward thread.
