Thanks for your kind words. I lookk forward to warm weather and sunshine. I dred paying taxes and my AK retirement will be cut by 10% when I leave. I've been retired 17 years (pulled the plug when I was 49) and don't pay any income tax, sales tax, or property tax.

Seems to happen to all of us at some point. Very few retire long term in AK. The support systems for aging retirees are just not there. Many of my friends have done what I’ve done, and moved to a warmer climate with a lower cost of living and better services in retirement.

I wish you well in your move Cal. Leaving Alaska is a tough pill to swallow.

So where can you go from here? I've been here over 40 years and start getting cranky if the temp gets much over 65*.

Has a lot of amenities. Used to have a vacation home just down the street whereas my much older siblings had places in there. It’s a peculiar place, central FL. Extraordinary wealth and poverty might overlap in a couple of blocks. Same with low crime and high crime. The southern gentleman and the uncouth bumpkin. Truly strange, you gotta check it out and see if its for you. It’s not like other places like NY or Chicago where the high crime and low crime do not mix whatsoever. Very politically mixed in the Villages too, mostly populated with various Yankees of all political stripes.

In the end, lack of hunting access, low pay, high costs, and cold winters had me sell my vacation home and move off. So too did 3 other relatives. If I was going to do that again, I think Chattanooga would be high on my list.

Not bursting your bubble, you may love it, but its a foreign land in Leesburg/Claremont/Villages. Only place I’ve ever been where I always carried a piece at all times, not like Chicago where you can avoid weird stuff easily.

Hi Cal, Florida is a great state. This is my third time back to Florida due to opportunities. Our first move to Orlando from Boston in the mid 80’s we didn’t love it. Our move back in the 90’s we found a beautiful lake to raise our kids on and got sand in our shoes. Moving to Rochester NY for 12 years was enjoyed but we are glad to be beachside. Central Florida does get warm and sticky but to many of us summer is looked forward to.

We moved
From Alaska to Alabama in 2007. While we miss Alaska, the outdoor opportunities in Bama are truly outstanding and it’s nice not to shovel snow anymore.

WAB: heavy snow is something I can probably do without.
Dave: I had a home in southern AZ but sold it as I didn't like the desert.

Having grown up in the Northern Rockies and spent about a year in Alaska I know what I can't take and it is humidity.

Humidity just kills me.

Lived a lot of hot places, and a lot of really cold places. I can manage the cold and heat, as long as it isn't humid.

I'd move to Casper, Wyoming if I was retired. Or Thermopolis, Wyoming if I wanted a small town with almost zero services.

Wyoming has no preference points for deer, elk, antelope, mountain goat and bison as a resident. Neither does Idaho or New Mexico. In Wyoming they have non-point draws for bighorns

Idaho is ok, but booming and prices are too high, New Mexico is pretty good. If you want some locations in New Mexico or Wyoming to check out let me know.

Personally, I would get a small remote place in Southeast for the summer. Fish like a basset, then after deer season to someplace warmer. I would go someplace with less snakes and bugs...
Maybe the Carolinas?

Humidity really sucks. Humidity is a bit like stupidity the older we get the less we can tolerate it.
