Also remember a shotgun pattern at the range of most home rooms is still basically one projectile. It’s not the pattern or spray many envision.

The only reason shotguns come up for home defense is their ubiquitous nature in every home and people familiarity with its use.

But a lighted AR or handgun is the better choice.

If living in a multi family dwelling or children sleeping in other rooms. The AR platform is the safer choice to lower the risk of shooting a friendly through walls.

When contacting drywall. Small fast bullets tend to tumble and yaw losing energy faster than the typical handgun bullet.

If you live alone or with one spouse. You may prefer the ability to shoot thru walls.

My Sheriff does not allow any caliber less than.32ACP for CCW. I had actually inquired about 5.57 as Sportsman's Warehouse had a sale on FN Five-SeveNs some time ago, and it seemed interesting.

What is the reasoning given for a minimum caliber/energy level for a CCW ?

Yep, for the target below I got certified with:

Infinity .40 S&W
STI .40 S&W
HK VP 9 9mm
STI DVC Carry 9 mm
Sig P938 9mm

I had slowed down to a shot every half a second or so. The sheriff might have had a point though. The shots at the bottom edge of the big hole were from the Sig P938 at 15 yards.

Total shots were 72 rounds from first weapon and 24 rounds from each of the rest to qualify. I chose my primary competition gun, the Infinity as the first weapon. Only reason I got certified with the two .40 competition guns so I would not need to lock them up when going to the range.

In many classes. The focus is to simply pass the course. And not realistic. Often, students take a .22 LR to the class. Then plan to carry a firearm they didn’t qualify with.

I disagree while I see the benefits you listed, I believe the energy delivery of a 12 ga make it a better choice. It can be lighted as well and you really only need several rounds in the mag unless the whole platoon breaks in and you’re probably hosed either way then.

One of my favorite guns to shoot... basically 357 magnum ballistics out of a tiny carbine package with a 20 or 30 round mag.. I regret the day I traded mine off to a friend.... they cost 10x today what I paid for mine in the late 80's.. I had a lot of fun with mine..

With $0 tax stamps and modern ammo, a 10 or 11" barreled SBR shooting 62gr bonded or heavier bullets makes a hell of a home defense weapon. Theres a reason its the weapon of choice for CQB for our tier 1 counter terrorist teams.. pop a short can on it and you have something that produces minimal recoil (easy to control and put multiple rounds quickly in a kill zone), is compact enough to be efficient in clearing around corners, in tight / compact quarters, etc.. is reliable (not always true back in the day, but with adjustable gas blocks and other advancements they can be outrageously reliable now), and plenty of power to reach vitals and kill easily at reasonable ranges..

Theres a reason you dont see submachine guns or shotguns deployed by SWAT teams or militarty CQB teams anymore except for specialized purposes like breaching or deploying less than lethal rounds...

The carbine rifle is the king of the hill these days.. nothing else gets close..
