Ask those that went to Vietnam what they thought of the draft?
Ridiculous argument, why not throw in WW 1, WW2 and the Korean War.
Different times and definitely a different armed services than today.

Different reason for going to war certainly but to ignore the opinions of those that were in the last draft is ignorant.

I agree with yours and Red Legs assessment that the current tactics used. And the reality of the Presidents travel and public appearances. It would be very difficult.

I was merely pointing out how easily it could go very bad for a lot of our leadership. I didn’t intend to say how more Secret Service could stop it.

P.S. I hope they never put the President and Vice President in a similarly lax situation when Hakim Jeffery is Speaker of the House
I also question...is it wise to have the President, V-Pres, and Speaker of the House along with multiple cabinet members attending the same event? I would think a well-planned and executed attack could successfully take out a significant number of our leaders. Again, I'm no combat vet, but I remember the Marines' emphasis on dispersion or "one grenade taking out all of you" (or words to that effect). Am I missing out on something regarding the strategic planning of such an event, and who will attend from our government? Has our "culture of protection procedures" changed from decades ago? With all the SOPs historically in place, we end up with a shooter at Butler <150 yds. from the President, Florida shooter <400 yds. from the President and this after shooter was in place approx. 12 hrs. Kash Patel recently on the news saying basically they are looking at and will be making some changes. Yeah.....I would hope. How can a simple lay person like myself see "holes" in their plan that seem so obvious....maybe I'm smarter than I think.

Not ignoring anyone’s feelings about the draft, we’ve been registering for the draft upon our 18th birthday for 46 years.

We’ve been registering for the draft for over 40 years.

Hell... I registered for it at least 4 times that I can remember... and three of those times were while I was still actively serving in the National Guard lol...

I registered once when I turned 18...

Then, the first 3 semesters I spent in college, every single time I went and stood in line to register for classes, they made me register for the draft.. I told them everything from "I registered when I turned 18" to "here is my military ID.. Im actively serving".. they didnt care.. to register for classes at Memphis State University, you had to register for the draft if you were a male over the age of 18.. they had no system in place to check and see if you were already registered.. so you filled out the card, or you didnt take classes...

I'd guess it was time for a system upgrade lol..

Similar at Auburn, I was enrolled in Navy/Marine ROTC and playing baseball and when we registered for classes they asked about draft registration. I ended up dropping out of ROTC when I had a chance to continue my baseball career after college.
Looking back I don’t know if it was a good decision or not.

It was my understganding that if you were active duty you were not required to register. I never did. I was active duty from 6/15/1980 to 11/2/1992

If I was 18 in good health and with no ties I would enlist tomorrow. I gained a lot of positive from the service and have few regrets. I just dont support anything related to a mandatory service.

you didnt...

the point was the system was so screwed up back then that A LOT of people not only still had to register.. they had to register multiple times..

I registered at 18.. then I went into the Army..

then later I went to college.. and was forced to register again if I wanted to take classes..

and then was forced to register again the next semester..

and then was forced to register again the semester after that..

at that point they either fixed whatever was wrong with the system or just stopped asking me to re-register..

but I ended up registering 4x times.. despite having served, and still serving in the National Guard while being asked to re-register multiple times..

So they are talking about 'registration for the draft' not actually a draft, correct?

AJ

You know that is something we heard all the time when I was younger.

You have so many days to register for Selective Service. Used to hear it all over the radio and TV. I never hear about it anymore.

That is, after all, the tactic we used to take out all of the top leadership in Iran isn't it?

A lot longer than that. I registered in 1965. IIRC Elvis was drafted in 1955. I don't think anyone is happy about being drafted but the vast majority on those conscripts did their duty to the best of their ability. Some went above and beyond. During Viet Nam, to my certain knowledge, soldiers were spit on and reviled by the very people they were trying to protect. The same people I see screaming at the ICE protests now.

I am not against the war in Iran. It was comming for a long time. I wish he would have gone to congress first. I think that Trump saying we won the war is the equivalent of Bush flying the mission complete flag.
Had Trump gone to congress the Democrats would have found a way to stop it and even if it was eventually approved the element of surprise would have been lost. I still believe that the world is safer because of this attack. If Iran succeeded in obtaining a nuclear weapon they would most certainly have used it. Remember that the Ayatollah said they would eliminate Israel with "one bomb." Had that happened the issues we gave now would be like comparing a few grasshoppers in your yard to a swarm of locusts.

Yes. Hating the military (or ICE) by the people that are being protected is nothing new. I had to register in 1972. I wasn't drafted but a friend of mine that was a few years older was. He told me about arriving back in the states and crowds at an airport calling him "baby killer" and spitting on him. That behavior then was disgusting then as it is now.

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
