While I’d agree that Tonga is probably not a national security threat to the US, I also don’t see why they should be ignored when it comes to overstaying visas.

“Tonga – population 100,000 – is the only Pacific island country included in the list. The White House said the restrictions were justified by a high rate of Tongans overstaying their visas – more than 14% for some visa categories, the US government said.”

Being small and benign is not an automatic pass to ignore American immigration law.
Strategic importance of the Tonga land mass, when examining the Pacific problem set. The Chinese are WILDLY interested in basing and access to islands all across the Pacific basin, including Tonga,. Much as I am strongly in favor of holding the line on immigration, from a national security strategy / second island chain perspective, this may be a short-sighted decision...

I wonder how many Jews voted for him?

Well, the following are the top 10 M&A law firms. All but 3 are in NYC. Kirkland is in Chicago and Latham and Watkins was founded in LA but operates without a formal HQ and Freshfields has its HQ in London but operates out of NYC for US mergers.

None in Texas.

  1. Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP
  2. Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz
  3. Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP
  4. Kirkland & Ellis LLP
  5. Latham & Watkins LLP
  6. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP
  7. Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP
  8. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP
  9. Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison LLP
  10. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP

$2B is a small merger for the above firms.

Edit: Here is a profit per partner numbers for the top 20 law firms, again majority in NYC. Interestingly my daughter worked at Wachtell (#2) and then got recruited heavily by one of the others on the list to kickstart their M&A department.

It will be interesting to see what their profits will be if the taxes pass.

I don’t disagree with your assessment of legal firms. I have worked with a number of them, but rarely out of NYC offices. I will say, my note was not referencing legal firms. In my world they do not lead M&A, they are a supporting function.

News from Venezuela.
This is quite something!

So, far president Trumps achievements: Panama take over by "Blackrock", and as it seams, Venezuela operations look successful.
Quite something for first year of presidential term.

Pending: close the war in Ukraine, and taking over Greenland? How?

For taking over Panama, I really had no idea how he might do it, news came as a surprise to me. Blackrock.
For Venezuela, I expected a military mission and bloody long lasting jungle war. Again, I was wrong.

Like Noreiga, him and maybe his wife will die in a U.S. prison. Classic FAFO.

If this was a "snatch and grab," then it will be the most successful decapitation ever conducted by SOF. It will be interesting to see if instead some sort of negotiated exit was in play along with selective strikes on command and control nodes. However accomplished, the military side of this looks brilliant.

Looking back on the same sort of effort's by the "second army in the world" in its failed airmobile assault at Hostomel to take out Zelensky and his government in the opening hours of the Russian invasion, this operation does offer an illustration of the rather meaningful capability gap between the US military and Russia. I am confident China is also watching closely.

LOL. Apparently, Hugo Chavez's mausoleum was one of the targets last night.

I am still speculating here, but if indeed a snatch and grab, then I would bet a serious mortgage payment it was carried out by Delta and there won't be a Mark Wahlberg movie.

I’d throw my next mortgage payment on top of that bet.

Speaking only to things easily found on Wikipedia… I’d play additional odds that G Squadron has been there for weeks.. E squadron did the insert/exfil, and multiple teams from one of the saber squadrons did the hit, with support from a company sized element (or larger) from the 75th..

I’m betting there was very little assistance from the “outside” at all.. I think those days are largely over.. CAG has been working hard to become a 100% autonomous unit for a long time… and they’ve gotten very good at it..
