Politics

Thanks for posting this @Alistair. I was unaware of it (though I am aware of Mr. Kisin) - an excellent piece, and well worth the time.
Yes, an insightful take on an interesting topic for sure. I see quite a lot of parallels to what he discusses on the internet these days.

There's a couple more in-depth interviews on the topic on the Triggernometry site with a few guests (mostly right leaning types, but some left leaning sources as well). Roughly an hour each, but worth a watch in my opinion.

Who exactly respects him?

He is a 65 year old journalist that is hardly known outside of Canada. He has spent almost his entire career writing for Canada specific publications. The last (and only that I can find) award he has received for journalism was in 1994, more than 30 years ago, and was form a Canadian organization..

I’d say his opinion on anything and his journalism resume is about on par with Fozzie Bear…
I think the issue arises because the OP used the term "highly respected." Mr. Coyne is an op-ed writer for the Globe & Mail. He is often worth reading, for Canadians (I would think his topics would be of little interest to those outside of Canada), because he is sometimes on the money, and sometimes given to flights of hysteria and bombast that are amusing, if nothing else.

There is certainly a group among whom he would be highly respected or at least just respected - these would likely be what we call in Canada the "Laurentian Elites". Because he writes for the Globe - which is pretty self-important itself - he fits right in. But there would be just as many who don't find his writings and musings worthwhile at all.

If I were asked to characterize him, I would say he's generally worth a browse for Canadians, but he needs to be taken with a grain or more of salt, just like most, if not all, op-ed writers. In other words, he writes to elicit a reaction, rather than to enlighten. This is not to be critical - he's in the business of selling newspapers, not in the business of educating.

Great insight Hank. Thanks!

Did anyone watch the rally in Pittsburgh? Did you see what happened. ????
To give you a hard insight.
USW went conservative at the local level.
USW hierchy remained corrupt
Trump made a promise
Trump kept promise
Nippon committed 14 B to rebuild USS and Trump safeguarded the investment with a 50% tariff on imports of steel.
Trump said out loud “ I was fighting for the steel worker” they negotiated with the union on the purchase of USS. Gave s 5k bonus to all steel workers and an agreed contract.
This was the single greatest achievement in rebuilding manufacturing back in the US since WW2. We have a president that does what he says. Make America Great Again.
The largest investment in US economy in history!

"But Trump said later on Friday that the deal between US Steel and Nippon Steel has not been finalized, despite the earlier celebration in Pennsylvania.

“I have to approve the final deal with Nippon, and we haven’t seen that final deal yet,” Trump told reporters after returning to Washington."

Shouldn't we wait until there is a done deal before we do the happy dance? Or maybe know the terms? Or if Nippon Steel will now own U.S. Steel?

And are you suggesting that a 14 billion investment in the US economy in history? For instance Taiwan Semiconducter has invested way more than that in Arizona alone (a program started long ago).

I certainly agree.
Trump is fighting hard for the common man, and economic growth in the manufacturing sector.
A big concern moving forward, is another spiteful democrat administration. They hate Donald Trump to such a vast degree, that they will do whatever they can to erase his success, at a great cost to middle america. They do not care about us.

This is the same deal that has been festering for almost two years.

Some of the original critics had good arguments. It was (2023) originally framed as an acquisition by Nippon Steel for 14.9 billion at $55 a share. That idea of an acquisition raised some legitimate national security and union concerns along with quite a bit of political nonsense as well. If I may put on my corporate hat, a foreign acquisition of a US company is typically considered a foreign investment. That is the same in this case. Nippon Steel's purchase offer is the 'investment" to which the President was referring and you are citing.

Credit goes to the Trump administration for reframing the acquisition as a "planned partnership" - Trump's words - or "merger" as in the terms of the current filing. But, U.S. Steel will indeed become a wholly owned subsidiary of Nippon Steel’s North America arm and continue to operate as a separate company. This is a model often used by foreign investors in the US. For instance, BAE Systems of the UK purchased United Defense in 2005 which became BAE Systems US and is one of the nation's two military tracked vehicle manufacturers (the Bradley). They are an independent subsidiary working highly classified US projects, but are also part of London based BAE.

Politically, the most important part of the deal is the “golden share” provision, giving the U.S. government veto power over key decisions and ensuring an American-majority board and CEO for U.S. Steel. This structure aims to maintain U.S. control, addressing national security and political concerns. This also parallels the BAE model.

USW leadership and much rank and file were early critics of the acquisition. It will be interesting to see if Trump's political capital (and $5K) is enough to change that position.

When the opening paragraphs start with ad hominem attacks it does not lend itself to convincing others about the bad policies of the subject of discussion. Might as well have played the Hitler card while he was at it.

We all know Trump lacks moral character, that was not why he was elected. Americans said "yes please" because he was the better of the two choices.

An argument can be made about his policies though again, all that hyperbole does not help the author to gain some credibility.

Respected? Maybe by the r/DemocraticUnderground folks on Reddit. It could have been written by one of them.
MR "TANKS" with all due respect to you, how do you know the moral character of Trump, have you been watching msnm again. If you are referring to law suits filed, that would not suffice without knowing who paid for the lawyers and promoted the filings, I..E. DEMOCRATS .

Not directly political, but I know that the circumstances around this movie have been discussed here. The fact that the plot begins with the kid accidentally shooting someone is dripping with irony.

shooting someone off a horse at 5-6 feet when aiming at a "husky dog" 1, 2 feet, is um bad shooting!

The moral character of Donald Trump - you're kidding, right? Do a search of all of his indiscretion. Even if we allow for some of them not to be true it defies credulity to believe everyone is lying and out to get him.

One example: a quote from an article that Trump said while being interviewed for a story in 2002 for New York magazine, about Jeffrey Epstein: "I've known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy. He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it, Jeffrey enjoys his social life."

15 years, and they were really close according to many sources. That's not exactly a vote for strong moral character. Either he was complicit and/or accepting, or he was the densest yokel to ever fall off a turnip truck.

I think @Tanks was spot on with his wording.

I’m within six months of placing a major order for steel in the construction of a new fertilizer plant. If this tariff increase sticks, it will hurt our project, but we will still move forward. I know of many others that will not survive a cost increase like that. It’s probably too much to ask them to consider the second and third order effects of their decisions.

Hmmm, he cheated on Ivana with Marla Maple (Maples introduced herself as his lover to Ivana when both were brought to Aspen by Trump), Melania with Stormy, stiffed vendors on many of his projects, stiffed customers at Trump University which resulted in a $25M settlement after 3 fraud lawsuits (filed in 2013 before he was in politics).

Not the mention the stolen election claims in 2020 which cost us Georgia Senate seats enabling Democrats to pass budget bills via reconciliation.

I will give you credit for consistency. You prove everyone's points time and time and time again.
I don't give a shit what you think. You make your derogatory comments and scurry away like the little coward that you are.
Trump and I have something in common, as we both live rent free in your tiny little TDS mind.

It's been stated that Iran has enough enriched weapons grade Uranium for 10 warheads.
Do they have detonable technology for those warheads, and a legitimate delivery system?
Do they dare use it?

I don't believe Iran would launch a nuclear tipped missile at Israel. It's origins could be tracked by satellite, and the retaliation would be severe.
I wouldn't put it past Iran to try and smuggle a nuclear suitcase type bomb into Israel.
