Yes, an insightful take on an interesting topic for sure. I see quite a lot of parallels to what he discusses on the internet these days. Thanks for posting this @Alistair. I was unaware of it (though I am aware of Mr. Kisin) - an excellent piece, and well worth the time.
I think the issue arises because the OP used the term "highly respected." Mr. Coyne is an op-ed writer for the Globe & Mail. He is often worth reading, for Canadians (I would think his topics would be of little interest to those outside of Canada), because he is sometimes on the money, and sometimes given to flights of hysteria and bombast that are amusing, if nothing else.Who exactly respects him?
He is a 65 year old journalist that is hardly known outside of Canada. He has spent almost his entire career writing for Canada specific publications. The last (and only that I can find) award he has received for journalism was in 1994, more than 30 years ago, and was form a Canadian organization..
I’d say his opinion on anything and his journalism resume is about on par with Fozzie Bear…
Great insight Hank. Thanks!I think the issue arises because the OP used the term "highly respected." Mr. Coyne is an op-ed writer for the Globe & Mail. There is certainly a group among whom he would be highly respected or at least just respected - these would likely be what we call in Canada the "Laurentian Elites". Because he writes for the Globe - which is pretty self-important itself - he fits right in. But there would be just as many who don't find his writings and musings worthwhile at all.
If I were asked to characterize him, I would say he's generally worth a browse for Canadians, but he needs to be taken with a grain or more of salt, just like most, if not all, op-ed writers. In other words, he writes to elicit a reaction, rather than to enlighten. This is not to be critical - he's in the business of selling newspapers, not in the business of educating.

"But Trump said later on Friday that the deal between US Steel and Nippon Steel has not been finalized, despite the earlier celebration in Pennsylvania.Did anyone watch the rally in Pittsburgh? Did you see what happened. ????
To give you a hard insight.
USW went conservative at the local level.
USW hierchy remained corrupt
Trump made a promise
Trump kept promise
Nippon committed 14 B to rebuild USS and Trump safeguarded the investment with a 50% tariff on imports of steel.
Trump said out loud “ I was fighting for the steel worker” they negotiated with the union on the purchase of USS. Gave s 5k bonus to all steel workers and an agreed contract.
This was the single greatest achievement in rebuilding manufacturing back in the US since WW2. We have a president that does what he says. Make America Great Again.
The largest investment in US economy in history!
I certainly agree.Did anyone watch the rally in Pittsburgh? Did you see what happened. ????

This is the same deal that has been festering for almost two years.I certainly agree.
Trump is fighting hard for the common man, and economic growth in the manufacturing sector.
A big concern moving forward, is another spiteful democrat administration. They hate Donald Trump to such a vast degree, that they will do whatever they can to erase his success, at a great cost to middle america. They do not care about us.
MR "TANKS" with all due respect to you, how do you know the moral character of Trump, have you been watching msnm again. If you are referring to law suits filed, that would not suffice without knowing who paid for the lawyers and promoted the filings, I..E. DEMOCRATS .When the opening paragraphs start with ad hominem attacks it does not lend itself to convincing others about the bad policies of the subject of discussion. Might as well have played the Hitler card while he was at it.
We all know Trump lacks moral character, that was not why he was elected. Americans said "yes please" because he was the better of the two choices.
An argument can be made about his policies though again, all that hyperbole does not help the author to gain some credibility.
Respected? Maybe by the r/DemocraticUnderground folks on Reddit. It could have been written by one of them.
shooting someone off a horse at 5-6 feet when aiming at a "husky dog" 1, 2 feet, is um bad shooting! Not directly political, but I know that the circumstances around this movie have been discussed here. The fact that the plot begins with the kid accidentally shooting someone is dripping with irony.
I’m within six months of placing a major order for steel in the construction of a new fertilizer plant. If this tariff increase sticks, it will hurt our project, but we will still move forward. I know of many others that will not survive a cost increase like that. It’s probably too much to ask them to consider the second and third order effects of their decisions.Did anyone watch the rally in Pittsburgh? Did you see what happened. ????

I don't give a shit what you think. You make your derogatory comments and scurry away like the little coward that you are.I will give you credit for consistency. You prove everyone's points time and time and time again.
