I recently acquired a very nice vintage .318 WR and it came fitted with the peep sight in the attached photograph as well as the original express-type sights. I have been searching the net far and wide to find out who made the peep, but no luck thus far. I have no idea what the "A" may represent. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

"A" stands for Ashley Outdoors or AO sight systems, which became modern day XS sights.

Thanks for the answers! It's a WW Greener, and except for the peep, it is in great shape. It weighs just over 7 lbs empty with a 24-inch barrel with Metford rifling. It is cased up with some of the original accessories. It handles like a good English rifle should. Standard military-surplus M98 action with a single-stage trigger. The Rigby mod with the little pin to convert to single-stage. I've always thought that the man tasked with those conversions must have had a very steady hand with the drill to get the placement of the hole just right!

The steel buttplate is similar to the ones I've seen on Westley Richards bolters and there's a WR number under the barrel, so I'm guessing it probably started out life as a Westley Richards barrelled action that was stocked and finished (or maybe even just finished) by Greener. Very interesting proof marks as well, for both cordite and Du Pont powder.

If all goes well, and provided I can get Geoff McDonald to make some 250-grain softs in the coming months again (he did make a batch recently that sold out almost overnight), the Greener will make passage to Africa with me in 2027 for a sable or some or another exotic critter.

Some of mine have the cordite and “Dupont” proofs as well. They are likely 4831. Nice rifle.

Hi PaulB. Would you be interested in another WJ Jeffery .450/.400 NE 3". It's an extractor model and in superb condition, cased as well. Made in 1908. The rifle is here in Texas.
