I have an inside line on a Parker Hale 404 Jeffrey. Looks to be in very good condition overall. Wood is not fancy, but looks to be in good condition. Metal looks good too. What's it worth?

Whatever you are willing to pay for it. I was just today bidding on a rare early BRNO ZKK in a rare caliber. Thought I was going to win it, but I got outbid by someone who was willing to pay more than I was.

There was a PH .404 on Gunbroker not that long ago and it went for around $1700 IIRC. I got outbid on that one too.:D

Toby, many years ago I purchased a used Parker Hale in 30-06. It kicked like a mule and wouldn't hit paper at 25 yds. Parker Hale replaced it with one of the most accurate '06(s) I've ever owned. Time frame was 1974-75. Make sure it works before you purchase it. Parker has no following in the U.S. Therefore basic rifle should be pretty cheap. Gunsmithing $1,200 - $1,400 if everything works as it should. All in not more than $1,850. Just my $0.02.

I've become a little scared of this rifle, due to some people saying the metal could be soft. Not sure if that's true or not, but I don't really want a project gun. I'd rather have one all ready to go.

@TOBY458 I know the one you're speaking of as I had an exchange as well. Not that I was in the market, but I'm always curious. I looked at it as if $1800 gets you a new MRC African in 404J thats done and ready...

Parker Hale made their rifles out of many different actions commercial Mausers and three or 4 others. Not sure what action they used on the PH model though. Short of a few minor issues, I’ve never heard of soft steel issues except maybe in the ones they made for JC Penny.
I agree with Art that under 1800 would be fair.

Are you close enough to the owner to meet him at a range, and see how it performs? Should prevent you from unexpectedly taking on a project gun you don't want.

I have heard the same soft steel thing flung about regarding Zastava Mark X rifles over the years, purest poppycock.
Most PH rifles use an action by Santa Barbara in Spain, but quite a few used ex mil 98 Mausers and either is good to go. They also did make a few rifles, rarely seen these days called the HUSSAR which used the BRNO ZG 47 action. There was one on GB the other day in .308 Norma mag. If it was another caliber I might have bid on it.

Just remembered another action PH used. It was a hybrid action with a Mauser receiver but with a Springfield 03 bolt! Used mostly on the Midland rifles IIRC.

If they used other actions I am not sure what they would be. I know if you look at this stuff on GB a lot like some people I know:whistle:, you see a lot of guessing going on as to what stuff is, and lots of it is just flat ignorance.

Unfortunately no. But the guy selling it is a well known gunsmith/gun maker. He is a very stand up guy, so I don't think he would stiff me if something wasn't right. He bought it to hunt with himself, but he's now over 80 years old, so he's selling off some guns.

Toby458, and your course of action is???? We all know that you have been itching to buy a 404 Jeffery.:rolleyes:

I don't know...Maybe buy another double rifle instead? :A Thumbs Up:
There is a rising bite at Gordy and Sons in Houston buddy! Give them a call and I will pick it up and hold onto it until Dallas!

Since you are buying the rifle from a reputable gunsmith and the rifle was his personal rifle I would assume that it cycles reliably, if so $1,800.00 would be a good price. Where are you going to get another .404j for that price? We love that caliber!

Well, I struck a deal on the 404 today. I hope it all works out! I think I did ok on it. I found out that it's unfired and still has the tag hanging on it.

Too bad MRC is out of business.

Toby,

I’m looking for a .404 Jeffrey preferably a Winchester Model 70 or a CZ 550.

Toby,

I prefer the .404 Jeffrey but I may also be in the market for a .416 Rem Mag.
