"Obsolete" items that you still use

I guess I should feel old, but I don't. I shoot shotguns from 80-100+ years old with lots of drop at comb and heel. I use tin lined copper pans, which I have learned to re-tin myself. I have some split cane fly rods. I use single stage loaders with balance scales. I regularly use ancient wood and metal planes and chisels on doors and other wood projects, just keep them razor sharp. I like walnut and blued steel and chrome moly barrels for the most part. I like rust blueing. Except for pictures, I would be as happy with a flip phone. If someone broke into my house, I wonder if they would even take half my stuff, or know what to do with it.
What obsolete things do you still hold on to?

Several 100+ old shotguns and rifles, my grandfathers gold pocket watch, an early last century drinks cabinet, vintage cutlery with ivory handles..vintage gun books, etc..

I prefer walnut and blued steel too. I like leather accessories (s!ings, belts, knife sheathes, cartridge carriers, etc.) I also prefer stag antler handles on hunting knives. Let's not forget Mauser 98 type CRF bolt action rifles.

Funny story. When my partner and I started dating I was doing a lot of cooking at her place. So, I bought her a cast iron skillet for my use. She is OCD when it comes to cleanliness, she absolutely destroyed it by scrubbing and cleaning it. I had to buy another one. I still tease her about it to this day.

I don’t know, I have lots of “old” things that I don’t really consider obsolete. My Pulaski Axe, tobacco knife, straight razor, 1903 Springfield, Hawken rifle, reel mower, cast iron cookware, cut crystal drink ware, Depression glass, wax jacket, crocks from the 1700’s, other random odds and ends. Have a couple of butter churns. Still need to pick up a draw knife for skinning trees.

My in laws still have a spring loaded fleam, but we don’t use that

My 7x57mm Mauser Churchill Gun Makers Model Deluxe was made in 1967

My .375 Holland & Holland Magnum Remington Model 700 Kevlar Stock Custom was made in 2000

My 12 gauge 3” Magnum Beretta Model 626E was built in 1987

My .32 ACP Webley & Scott Model 1921 was built in 1924

None of these firearms are manufactured anymore, today.


I prefer wooden stocks to synthetic. I prefer blued steel to stainless steel. I prefer side by sides to over & unders. I prefer fixed chokes to choke tubes.

I EDC (Every Day Carry) an early Buck Model 110 lockback folding knife with a 440C stainless steel blade.

I prefer to wear my dress trousers with suspenders rather than a belt. I prefer pleated dress trousers to flat front.

I like my steaks charred over cast iron pans (none of that teflon lined non-stick garbage).

So, yeah. You could say I’m definitely an old timer.

My loving granddaughter once told me “Grandpa, the fact that you like anchovies on pizza is a tell-tale sign that you’re old !”.

I have a Brooks Brothers linen suit which I’ve been wearing since 1979.

Vintage Wagner cast iron. Simply the best American made cast iron pans.

Have many from size 6-16 and several Dutch ovens. Also own a very rare Wagner 3 burner gas cooktop in excellent working condition. Use them all at nearly every meal.
